was away, updates expired end of september. Just got back yesterday - renewed last night [paid], naturally the little reminder pops up to renew - but it also warns that my installation reverts to the unregistered version if I download the update.

I understand that. It's just unusual that it cancels out my original registration and reverts.
Yes - I also received today the new reg key.
My question is: since it says in the regkey eimail, to completely shut down Nexus BEFORE installing the upgrade - am not sure why the feature within Nexus even has the "renew" ability, where it would not be shut down.

I have backed up my settings of course. Am I safe, to just 'update', then insert the new key, then use my backup to get my stuff back?

Appreciate feedback on this.

Michele

There are two ways you can upgrade to a new version: either through the Winstep Update Manager, which downloads and installs the upgrade for you, or by manually downloading the full version from the Winstep web site and installing that on top of your current version.

In neither case will you lose your settings. Those will only be lost if you uninstall *and* tell the uninstaller to remove your settings when prompted.

Now, when a new release is already outside your period of free upgrades, the Update Manager will warn you about this prior to the download. You are then given the option to renew immediately or later. You can also proceed with the download or cancel it.

If you do decide to proceed with the download, or even if you download and install the new release manually, nothing bad will happen even if you didn't renew or if you don't have your new license key yet. The new version will simply run as a trial, the Registrations tab makes a come back, and you have 30 days to decide whether to renew or not.

If you decide that the new release has nothing that interests you, you can automatically roll back to the previous version by clicking on a link in the Registrations tab.

If you decide to renew *after* installing the new version (which is now running as a trial), the application itself knows - because it has your old license key - that you are renewing your upgrade subscription instead of making a first time purchase. So the 'Buy Now' button in the Registrations tab will take you to the renewal page instead of the new purchase page.

Once you renew and you get your new license key, you only need to save the attached key into a folder in your hard drive and double click it. The new key replaces the old one and the new release that was outside your upgrade subscription, and therefore running as a trial, is now registered - and you have another full year of free upgrades.

Hi Jorge. I got a message today that says in 15 days the trial version will end. How did I get a trial version? The only update I made since the registration ran out was the one that fixed the problem with the weather module where it no longer showed the forecast.

I figured that this update wouldn't be part of the normal update that would trigger this since this is an integral part of the program's functionality, not simply an upgrade of some sort and everything was working fine before the registration expired a couple of weeks prior.

At some point later on I will renew. What should I do to prevent Xtreme from not functioning? I'm not quite sure since the OP's situation is slightly different than mine.

Windy, glad you brought this up because there are a few things I would like to make absolutely clear regarding this:

1. The weather module did not stop working because of a bug in Winstep applications. In fact, the code to retrieve the weather information from the Weather Channel feed is still working just fine.

What happened is that the Weather Channel decided to shut down their feed. And, without a feed, there is no information to display.

This affected *all* weather widgets that relied on the Weather Channel feed to retrieve information. So, if anybody is to be blamed, blame the Weather Channel, not Winstep. Winstep can't be held responsible for what 3rd parties do with their own feed.

2. When Winstep learned that the Weather Channel was going to shutdown their weather feed, it immediately got to work on finding alternate weather feeds and implementing a solution, so disruption to Winstep users would be minimal and only for a short time.

Coming up with these alternate weather feeds and writing code to extract information from them took time and resources (about a week of work).

If Winstep didn't care, it could have just shrugged its shoulders and said 'well, tough luck, guess the weather module is dead through no fault of our own'.

Instead it got to work and added support not for one, but TWO alternative feeds, one serving as a backup in case something like this happens again.

3. v11.10 offered much more than a fix to the Weather feed problem, it had plenty of new features just like all other Winstep updates.

4. Users who had an active update subscription got their v11.10 update for free, as normal. Users who didn't, had to renew to get v11.10 *and* another year of free upgrades, also as normal.

5. I disagree with you when you make it sound like the weather module is such an important part of Winstep. The weather module is just one of the thousands of features you will find in Winstep applications, and certainly not the most important. There are plenty of free weather module widgets out there, in fact.

Nobody buys a Winstep application because it features a weather module. :D

6. The Winstep Update Manager will explicitly warn users when a new update is outside their subscription period and ask them if they want to renew. If you upgraded via the Winstep Update Manager, there is no way you can claim ignorance, Windy.

Even if you upgraded by downloading the full version from the Winstep web site and installing that on top of your previous installation, you still have the roll back mechanism in the Registration tab that allows you to go back to the previous version.

Furthermore the current weather conditions retrieved from locations that feature a METAR code never stopped working. So, if you're running v11.6, you can still select a location near you (usually an airport or a location with a weather station) that has a METAR code and use that to retrieve current weather conditions.

I understand. I and I'm sure most everyone greatly appreciates what you did.

You're being too modest Jorge. Even though there are others, to me, yours so far is the best out of the few I've tried.

I DL it from the beta section and assumed it was a patch that fell outside of the normal set of upgrades. As far as the warning, I think I ignored it for the aforementioned reason especially since I didn't install a trial version or didn't use the normal update method. I'll use the rollback feature you mentioned.

Thanks for your help and tireless work you put into making this a great program!
