Greetings.

I'm a new user to Winstep Nexus. I've gone from Windowsblinds, to Aston Desktop over the last 10 years, in search for something that could make my boring desktop look not so boring. Nexus is awesome looking, but it has some bug I can't seem to get around.

There are times where my full screen windows, and desktop bounces or jumps. I don't know what I do to make this happen. For example, I can have Lotus Notes open, and all of a sudden, it bounces up and down (just a pixel or two from the nexus bar up, then a pixel or two down). If I minimize the window, the desktop will be bouncing the same way, this is visible by my desktop icons. If I then exit Nexus, everything is normal again. If Nexus is running, if I keep all my windows not maximized, they don't jump, but I can see my desktop jumping. Eventually it stops, but then it will do it again after a few moments.

I'm not sure why this happens and have not found any other forum topic describing this. I was all set to buy Nexus Ultimate, but didn't want the bug to still be there, and be out $24.00.

Programs I use are Lotus Notes 8.5 (eclipse edition), Lotus Sametime (eclipse based), Firefox 3.6, MS Office 2010. I am using Windows XP SP3.

Nexus.exe 10.06.0911, Nextcontrols.ocx 1.00.0151, Region.dll 1.00.0001, wsZip.dll 1.01.0000, wsUnzip.dll 1.01.000

Let me guess... Your video card is an ATI Radeon, am I right?

It's a Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset. It's a basic video card, that comes with the motherboard on a Lenevo T61 laptop.

I also forgot to mention that when the windows begin to jump, the icons on my desktop flash.

It sounds like you've heard of something similar with the ATI Radeon video cards?

Not directly related to Nexus, no, but my ATI Radeon 5870 makes the screen flicker/jump whenever graphics activity changes the memory clock of the card (for instance, when I start running a Flash video). Annoying but I can live with it until ATI gets their act together - if ever.

In your case, with an Intel graphics chipset, I would say it probably is a driver or hardware related issue (i.e.; nothing directly to do with Nexus itself).

Just adding more information. I forgot to mention that, when the Nexus bar is at the bottom of the window, the foreground window attempts to resize. It appears the window is going up and down, but the top of the window remains constant, only the bottom appears to raise and drop, creating the "jumping" effect. As I'm typing this, my Firefox window is jumping. :( really annoying.

Hmmm... Does this issue go away if you disable the 'Prevent maximized windows from overlaping the dock' setting?

OK, I've tried this now for two days per your suggestion, just to make sure, and yes it works how you specified. This, however, makes the dock unusable for me. The whole reason for using the dock, was to use it as an alternative for the Windows task bar. Let me explain.

In order to see the dock at all times, I made it float above my other windows. This did stop the jumping effect, and made me happy, however it was always in the way. I would have to move it up to get to items at the bottom of the screen, or move it down to get to other items it was covering. When I would click on the Windows Start Menu button, the dock would float above the Start menu, making program folders under it impossible to get to.

I then found the collapsing feature of the dock, which is good, but then I needed to double click on the dock to switch to a window. This soon got tiresome.

I had originally hidden the Windows Taskbar, but found that it was easier to switch to other windows/programs just by unhiding the Windows Taskbar and using that again. If I am going to go back to the Windows Taskbar, then I see no need for Nexus.

This is unfortunate because I think this application is very useful and pretty. It helped me to stand out of the crowd of users who are stuck using Windows XP, because that is the OS of choice at my company. If I could just use Nexus as a replacement taskbar, with it always showing at the bottom of my screen (or the side) and have other windows respect it's location, without the jumping effect, well...that would be great, but alas, it is not the case. Maybe I could use Nexus for modules and Quicklaunch items only.

Thanks for your help Jorge.

What bugs me is that I haven't yet understood/visualized what you call the 'jumping effect'. Is there any chance of making a video?

Am I missing something? Have you tried using the bump feature or is that not suitable for your taste?

If you don't have the software or know how to make a video, just let me know and I'll post the info to help you out.

I'm sure it will make things a lot easier and Jorge will more than likely be able to figure out the source of the problem.

I also had a thought. Do think that your pc could be infected and could be the problem?

Update:

I had an epiphany today. I was prepared to just use Nexus as a supplemental quick launch bar, or uninstall it, when I thought that maybe I should try the other Winstep software to see if they cause the jumping windows phenomena as well. I downloaded Winstep Xtreme 10.6, and HOLY COW!!! Can I pay twice for 1 license?? This thing is awesome.

I have been running it for the better part of the day, and no jumping windows! Hooray.

I don't know what the differences are in how the taskbar in Winstep Xtreame works differently than Nexus when replacing the Windows taskbar, but using Nexus I had window jumping issues. With Winstep, no issues.

Maybe that's your game Jorge. Give people little issues with Nexus, so that they have to go to the paid app???? Joking. I am really impressed. Thanks for being attentive with my other issue, but for now it's moot, since I have no need to use Nexus now.

Hehe, while I'm glad you were blown off your socks by Winstep Xtreme , I would still like to know what the jumping window issue was, just in case it really is some obscure bug I am not aware of.

I have the same problem with Nexus of my screen jumping at the bottom just above the Nexus dock.

Watch video and pay attention to the bottom of the screen.

Thanks.

Whoah. Weird.

Is that version 11.10 of Nexus?

Also, I need you to experiment a bit to try and figure out what might be causing it. Try reducing the icon size of the dock to see if a dock that isn't using the full screen width still causes that issue (my guess is that it won't).
