When I right-click a dock I created, a dialog box pops up reading Workshelf Exception Handler: Access Violation. It offers the choices Retry and Cancel. If I choose Retry everything seems essentially well. I do notice that dock windows sometimes fail to paint screen space beneath them when they're moved or changed in shape. But I think that minor problem is unrelated to right-clicking my dock.

In view of an access violation, the natural questions follow: Does this indicate some problem in the installation or configuration of the product or is it related to one or more product bugs? In the grand scheme of things, the problem seems not to amount to no more than a mild annoyance. But I suppose it might indicate a deeper problem that will grow more serious over time. And, access violations simply aren't a good sign.

Thanks for any information or assistance.

Cheers,

As I pointed out in the other thread, this could be caused by a buggy 3rd party context menu add-on/extension. Open WorkShelf Preferences, go to the General tab, click 'More Options', change 'Show full right click context menu options' to 'Never', then see if WorkShelf still crashes.

Thanks very much, will do.

Cheers,

P.S. After making the instructed change, I don't immediately see any Access Violations. OTOH, I reset the option to Always don't immediately see any Access Violations. They are sneaky little monsters, aren't they!

I'll leave the option set to Never, as instructed.

(See similar conversation in a concurrent thread, http://forums.winstep.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4749.)

Yep. Even Explorer itself isn't immune to buggy 3rd party add-ons, which is why Microsoft sometimes uses a sacrificial process when dealing with 3rd party DLLs and extensions. This way, if the 3rd party DLL crashes, it only brings down the sacrificial process and not Explorer itself.

I didn't realize that's how they've worked around, I won't say solved, the problem. I do recall life before the workaround was in place, when Explorer would crash irrecoverably on a whim, so to speak :{
