Is it possible to remove items from Recent without actually deleting the files?

if you're talking about removing them from the recent menu on the start menu yes. if you don't actually use the menu you can simply go into the start menu properties and disable the feature. now because i have removed a few items from the nextstart menu i don't remember if there was a recent menu, however any item you delete from there will not delete it off the disk.

Sorry, I meant Recent tab from Shelf. From there, Delete deletes the file as well - just tested it.

Yep, that is what happens.

The recent documents structure is based on a combination of shortcuts in a special folder and registry entries, so I can't just delete the shortcut from the special folder to make it disappear from the Recent Documents list.

However, keep in mind that you have an Internal Command available to clear all the Recent Documents which you can put on a dock or a 'regular' tab of the Shelf (right click -> Insert New Item -> Internal Command -> Misc -> Clear Recent Documents).

You can also specify how many recent documents should be displayed in the Recent Documents tab in the Content tab of the Shelf Properties dialog.

Just going through old forum threads and came across this.

I use the 'recent' tab as well as another method. There are a whole lot of file types that I have excluded from appearing in the recent list.

Nirsoft has a whole pile of little utilities for doing a whole lot of things. One of those apps is File Types Manager. Running the app lists all the filetypes registered on your system and double clicking on one brings up a menu where you can check a box that disables that type from appearing on the Recent list.
