Just trying to fiddle with the (standalone) systray. I managed to get it displayed transparently or with a gray background. Though, having created a sysback.bmp I'm not able to get the custom background to work ('bitmap' is selected). Even 'gradient' does not work. What am I doing/understanding wrong?

The option to skin the systray background is only intended for a systray IN the NextSTART Startbar (i.e.; the background is applied to the Startbar, not to the systray itself). Since you are trying to mimic the NeXT OS, I imagine that you've disabled the Startbar and are using a detached , buttonized, tasklist instead.
