All of a sudden, my nexus dock doesn't show. The only thing that shows are the two modules I have set to open. I temporarily disabled workshelf so that naturally doesn't show. I used to be able to show nexus by doble clicking on the winstep xtreme shortcut but now that only starts nextstart and not the nexus dock. So, now, I do not have any access to the preferences menu or anything. I basically can't use the program at all. Please help.

By any chance are you using the trial version that expired?

open task manager by pressing ctrl, shift, esc. end the nextstart.exe, workshelf.exe, wsxservice.exe processes. launch nextstart and workshelf from you startmenu. now you should have either workshelf, nexus, or both launched besides nextstart. you can now access your shelf and dock preferences to see if you changed something by mistake.

Thanks for the reply Chucky. I already uninstalled and re-installed. When I uninstalled I changed the settings so when it re-installed it was fresh. That worked though I had to reset all my icons on the dock, etc.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Got a little busy. After seeing it was not a trial version my recommendation was going to be to do a System Restore or re-install as you've done.

Out of curiosity, did you install or uninstall something around the time it happened? I was also going to say that it could have been a Windows Update, but I've had several of them recently and it hasn't affected my setup. Computers are so temperamental.

P.S. Other than this oddity, is Xtreme working out for you so far?

Thanks for your reply windy. I didn't uninstall or install anything at that time. I really don't know what happened. In any event, would Chucky's alternate idea of closing processes worked? That sure would have been a lot easier.

Also, winstep works just fine otherwise. Like I said, this was the first problem I encountered (though a very puzzling one).

I guess using the Processes tab could work. You should first check to see if there is some other program that is running unusually high and terminate that one instead of any Winstep processes.

For example, you could be watching a video with a buggy file that causes the CPU and RAM to run high which will cause Winstep and/or other programs to hang so the proper thing to do is to terminate the player.

You can try this program to help with the start-up. It's called Autoruns.

http://download.cnet.com/Autoruns/3000- ... 44886.html I use it and it helps immensely to allow for a faster start-up and makes the computer run better since a ton of programs you don't need are not running. It might also help to pinpoint a program that starts to run that could have caused the problem. For example, if you stop certain programs from running and then you open one of them and then soon after you have a problem, you automatically know which program is the culprit.

Once you make your selection of the programs you don't want to run at start-up save the file. To change which programs will start-up you have to re-open Autoruns and change it. YOU CANNOT CHANGE IT BY OPENING AND USING THE SAVED FILE. It is only for viewing which programs you selected to run and not run. The reason I'm telling you this is because there is no difference in appearance to when Autoruns is opened and the saved file.

Advanced users can even use Autoruns to remove malware.
