Hey,

I want to use the integrated E-Mail Checker application, but it's not working. I've set up everything correctly and checked it multiple times, but I still get an error "Connection failed".
It's an imap account with SSL-Connection. Is it possible, that some providers aren't supported?

Thansk for any help / advice

@eneco,

Most likely the "Account name" should be "1und1.de".

You might also try port 143 -or- try with/without SSL

Nothing has changed, still getting the error. But I think SSL is required, since I have it also activated in Outlook. I just copied all the settings from there, but it's not working :(

I gave up on Outlook years ago and advise others to get rid of it and use Thuderbird instead. It just might alleviate the issue you are having. Outlook poses a high security risk as does IE.

I have installed Thunderbird on many computers and everyone is happy with it so far. It was like pulling teeth to get most of them to change from Outlook, but once they saw there were no problems unlike Outlook, they were very happy.

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

If you need any help setting it up let me know.

P.S. Make sure that you check and change the account/server settings to make sure it won't automatically delete your e-mails after a certain amount of time if you don't want it to.

Chucky, open Thunderbird and on the toolbar:

Click Tools > Account Settings > Junk Settings under both your e-mail name and Local Folders > and change the filters to your liking.

It gives some instructions on what the filters do. You will have to train Thunderbird by identifying spam and non-spam as it states in the instructions.

I have not used this feature because I don't DL my e-mail to it. Just a matter of preference. I view my e-mail via the server. The main reason I use Thunderbird is for POP. Many others I know however do use Thunderbird for e-mail viewing and everything works out fine for them.

I recommend keeping a copy on the server in case something happens to the computer. Thankfully Thunderbird changed the default setting to keep a copy on the server. I requested they do that several times and it seems they listened! :D In the past, it would automatically DL all of your e-mails without leaving a copy on the server which is totally stupid and disastrous when you first install Thunderbird if you didn't know or want it to do that.

P.S. It's also a good idea to compact the Inbox e-mails which makes deleting much easier, saves disk apace and improves performance. The smaller the amount of messages in the Inbox, the better the performance. The notification will ask once you attempt to delete messages. Be advised! Once you compact messages they are gone forever! They cannot be recovered. Compacting IS NOT COMPRESSING! It means that it is permanently removing it from (view on) the disk.

If you have messages that are important to keep, create a folder(s), and move them from the Inbox to the folder of your choice by:

Right-clicking Inbox > New Folder > Enter name of folder > click pull-down to chose the location of the folder.

Well, I never had any problems with Outlook and I'm satisfied with it's features. So there is no need for me to switch now to another program.
Guess I have to pass on the E-Mail Checker, cause I won't switch my E-Mail program just to get this little application to work.

Okay cool, thanks for letting me know. That's what makes the world go round, people have different preferences, hence the wise choice Jorge made (in particular) with Xtreme making it so customizable.

I hope when you have some time you read up on the security issues that Outlook has. You might change your mind. Take care. :)

I guess so, but I remember almost every few months it was reported that there were major security issuea and MS had to put out a patch.

I also read on many occasions how vulnerable Outlook is as is IE. I also had many problems with it as did many users I know and I replaced it with Thunderbird and they haven't had a problem since.

Every last one of them thanked me for doing it. Almost all of them were extremely reluctant, but since they had so many problems with it they finally relented. Heck I just did one about a month ago. It took 2 years of them repeatedly calling me to fix the issues with Outlook until I finally got to the point where I told them that I was not going to do it anymore even if they paid me a million dollars! Well not that much

I installed Thunderbird and believe it or not just today the person called and said how happy they are with it. In my opinion, it's far more stable and less headaches with security issues.

Remember the average person doesn't have the knowledge and/or time including me to deal with elaborate methods of manually setting up programs to prevent simple breaches when it could have been prevented by simply making a better product.

the only real difference is when fitefox, thunderbird, etc.. do updates they do a overall update that include any security patches. in other words security updates are hidden. microsour on the other hand does everything as individual updates, so you see any security updates they have. now if switching to thunderbird fixed the op's problem great, but if not help him troubleshoot using the client he prefers.

I understand that, however, my experience tells me that Outlook's record of instability and security are miles apart from Thunderbird.

I gave the best advice I could and so did Grouch. I just noticed in the settings that Grouch posted he also uses Thunderbird so it's possible that something with Outlook may be causing the problem. It could also be the anti-virus/firewall programs. Jorge will have to help.
