Thank you. I was trying to update because I got a notice that there was a new Nexus update. (I don't recall from where.) Before I did the reinstall I clicked Check For Updates on Nexus, and it said all updates were installed. So I'll not redownload.

UPDATE: I again completely uninstalled NEXUS using Revo, then downloaded it from the Winsted site. A box still opens with the message that Nexus Updates Are Available when I start Nexus, and if I try to install the updates I get that same box: "Winstep Update Manager
Download Failed
Error decompressing setup failed."

with winstep products i would not use one of the uninstall programs. i've notice with a couple of them winstep breaks instead of uninstalling completely.

Experts told me Revo is the most through uninstaller. The Nexus uninstall before that was done with the Windows 7 uninstaller. What uninstaller do you recommend for the next one?

actually advanced uninstaller and your uninstaller far superior than revo, but like i said do not use one of the uninstall programs to uninstall a winstep product.

The problem may not be related to getting a new copy of Nexus. Several other possibilities are: 1) problems with the firewall; 2) writing permissions (are you installing as an administrator?); 3) problems with the decompression; 4) some other general error bundled into that message.

However, let's assume that a new clean copy of Nexus will solve the problem. Uninstallers are generally not very useful. First they have to be in the system when you install. Second, no one better that the original developer to know what he wrote and where. So today an installation comes with its own uninstaller that Windows uses. You will need CCleaner a fairly competent and free tool to deal with this. Find it here: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

1) With Nexus running, deselect the option "Start with Windows," and save. Exit Nexus.

2) Go to the Control Panel of Windows and uninstall Nexus. Then make a computer wide search for files or folders named "Nexus" or "Winstep." Places where these may reside include but are not limited to AppData, Public Documents and MyDocuments. Delete these folders. They may resist deletion on three cases 1) that requires administrative permissions you don't have (do it as an administrator); 2) There are files inside that are in use, but then Nexus is still running (check it isn't, make sure it will not start with windows, restart the computer) 3) They are Read-Only (change the selection).

We are not done with the clean-up yet. Now it's time for CCleaner. We will use it to do three things: 1) Check Tools-StartUp. Nexus and/or Winstep should not be in the list. If you have an entry for Nexus, delete it. 2) Go to the Registry and make a scan. You may get unused extensions, obsolete paths and keys, belonging to programs you meanwhile uninstalled or from installers themselves. You may go through them one by one to verify this and give you some piece of mind. Choose "Fix issues" and you will be asked if you want to back up the current registry. I never do, but that's unsafe. Then the errors are presented one by one and I always select "Fix all selected issues." 3) Finally let's make a general system wipe. Go to "Cleaner," set what to Analyze and run Analyze. Here, do not modify advanced settings. I also keep Form History because it is useful to have usernames ready when login-in someplace. Some setting deletes my email passwords but I haven't yet figured which one. This mostly cleans History, junk files and cache storage. After running Analyze run the Cleaner.

This is as squeaky clean you can be without a system clean install.

Now restart the system and download Nexus again.

Please let us know if this helped. If it doesn't, there are a bunch of ways of getting a general system error, that has nothing to do with the version number (an update) that coughs up a message on decompressing setup. In other words, I recommend that if the system tells you there's an update but then gives error when performing it, simply refuse the update [until Winstep figures what's up]. Bear in mind that it may be conflict with something else, or Nexus is trying to perform an update that doesn't exist.

actually uninstallers work great for almost all programs. it's only a handful of programs that they don't work well with. as for actually uninstalling the only things you really need to do is go to programs and features and uninstall from there, check the registry for winstep and nexus entries and delete the ones that do pertain to the winstep product, restart, download a fresh copy of nexus, install, if you get the update message again just ignore it till someone figures out a fix for you.
