Before I restore Winstep using a backup file from 2011, I thought I would see if there is any knowledge regarding the problem I am having. When I try to open a menu in NextStart, I have to click on the menu item (icon) many times before the menu will stay open on the screen. There is no definite number of times I have to click. The menu will appear & then disappear immediately. This is driving me crazy. The same thing occurs when I try to make a TaskBar item go either to the front or to the background. It takes an undetermined number of clicks to achieve either case. Of course I do not even know whether restoring Winstep would solve this problem.

Anyway, any help is appreciated. I have a pretty powerful computer running Windows 7. My Winstep version is 11.10. Thanks in advance.

It could be your mouse. The left button switch might be worn in which case a single left click may turn into a double click.
Also happened to me with three mice within a year, the last one already showed this behaviour within two weeks of purchase.
But if this is the case, you should have trouble with other applications also (like menus opening and closing, after being clicked only once with the mouse).

This does not occur with other Menus. It would appear to be related to NEXTSTART. I'm afraid to restore my 2011 backup since I'm not sure what will be saved from current config.

OK. I did a NS restore. That did not solve the issue. Since I lost all my hotspots (Quick-launch items), I then did a system restore. Now I'm back to ground zero: with original problem. CRAZY.

I guess you have to start reverse-thinking here. What changed in your system recently? I'm sure NextStart didn't just start acting up all of a sudden.
Could be something as inconspicuous as a broken Windows update, a newly installed programme, even a driver update.
One thing is certain, though: something changed. I guess it's your job to find what.

Yeah, good luck to me... Nothing has changed & nothing new has been installed except for Windows updates & TURBOTAX.. However, the problem has been present for at least 1 month. So, can't be TT. UGH..

Make a backup of current NS settings so you can Restore later, open Preferences, go to Advanced tab, click Troubleshooting Options, click Reset Everything.

Now create a new hotspot if necessary and see if the problem persists. If it does, at least you now know it has nothing to do with NS itself. Try a new mouse.

How can I do that when NS has totally disappeared from my screen?
Since I am having surgery tomorrow, I don't know when I will get back to this problem. All I know now is that I lost NS & everything appears to be totally screwed up on my screen. I am missing the task Bar. Also, I cannot create a new hotspot since I have no NS. How can I even restore NS since I have lost NS.. I am not a happy camper.

A final word before heading to the hospital. I finally detected the NS button (with associated Menu) in the upper left of the screen.
However, I cannot find a way of accessing the NS PREFERENCES. In any case, when I click on the NS button, it behaves normally. Previously, when I clicked the NS button, the Menu would disappear as previously described. I presume this means the problem is in fact related to NS.

I can do e-mail from the hospital on my TABLET.

I just want to convey my best wishes for a quick recovery, my friend.
You just get well soon and don't worry about NextStart... we'll fix everything.
Take care!

Thanks Skagon.

I am doing very well after major surgery.

I did a SYSTEM RESTORE after having tried Jorge's suggestions since I could not find a way of accessing NS PREFERENCES. Also, as I mentioned, when clicking on the only NS button available (NS Menu), the menu behaved well. It did not disappear off the screen.
So, all I need is to repeat Jorge's directions along with knowing how to access NS PREFERENCES. I will wait to hear back. No rush. Thanks.

Glad you are doing well, John! :)

There are several alternate ways to access NS Preferences: double clicking the NS system tray icon, right clicking the NS tray icon and selecting Preferences, double clicking a NS menu's title bar, and, finally, pressing CTRL+F12.

Thanks Jorge. I'm going to start over & reset everything in NS. I know I tried getting NS Preferences without any success previously.
I will try again via the alternatives you outlined. Will let you know what develops..

All my problems have disappeared which means that the problems were NS-related. When I reset everything, all did not go according to plan. For example, all hotspots were not removed. The hotspots reverted to an earlier time. Also, the only way I could access PREFERENCES was by D-clicking the Title Bar. So be it. Everything is now in order. Thanks again. I learned for the future.

The good thing is that you're ok. By far.

The next good thing is that now, after the reset, it's working as it should.
I don't know exactly what's going on under the hood of NextStart, I'm not its programmer, but when it says "Reset Everything", I kinda expect... well... to... you know... reset... kinda... EVERYTHING?
As in, "back to factory settings"?
Anyway, the "glitch" could have been some bizarre settings combination that caused it, and if so, it would be very interesting to know the exact configuration. However, it could also have been simply corrupt settings. Not the first time that happens, but anyway, it's not very easy to find the cause of that.
Also, the CTRL-F12 should have worked as well, since it's a global shortcut, unless you changed or disabled it, or some other programme on your computer had overridden it.
