This is a great program and I would love to use it at home and also at work. Problem is the work computers are locked and require admin rights so I can not install anything.

:?: Is it possible to create a portable version of the Nexus dock program?

I have copied all the program files into a folder, including the 3 drivers from the Windows Syswow folder, which stops it from giving me the cant find file error, however it still wont start. I'm not sure if I'm missing a file, registry entry or something else. (Windows 10 & Windows 7)

I searched the forum here and the last mention of this was a few years ago so was hoping there might now be an easy way to make the Nexus dock portable.

Is there anything I can do to make Nexus portable? Has anyone figured out how to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

The short answer is no, sorry.

Nexus requires admin privileges to install critical components which can only be installed if, well, you have admin privileges. Without those components installed and correctly registered in the Windows Registry, it won't run.

Thanks for your fast response.

I'm disappointed that its not possible to be portable, please consider making that an option in a future version, it would be great!

I found your program after using Object Dock for many years and think Nexus is so much better than that and others.

Unfortunately the lack of portability makes me unable to use it across all the machines so I need to keep looking for an alternative.

If you can think of a work around to make it portable in the future, please let me know! I would gladly pay for this program if it was portable.

Last I checked, the license is for a user, not a machine. By that I mean, if you have 4 machines, and you're the user of those 4 machines, you can have it on all 4. Jorge, please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Thanks for your response, my question about installing on multiple machines was geared towards a "portable" version, that is being able to run/use the program without doing a system install.

This has a number of advantages for me because I work on several computers throughout the week and my primary work machine does not allow me to install programs due to security restrictions, which I suspect is becoming more and more common in corporate jobs.

Ultimately this means I can't use this great program unfortunately.

Judging by your post on the wishlist you seem to be thinking that I'm not making Nexus portable because I don't want to, or that this is something that could be added as a 'feature'. It's not.

Nexus has external DLL and runtime dependencies that need to be correctly installed and registered in the Windows Registry for Nexus to even be able to run. This requires admin privileges. Even if I made the applications themselves write settings to an INI file instead of the Windows Registry, there is no escaping that.

There are also some specific functions performed by Winstep applications that require admin access. Since the applications themselves run (indeed they MUST run) non-elevated, this is accomplished via a Windows Service, which obviously also requires admin privileges to install. Without it running, those functions will not work properly or at all.

I'm sorry you feel that you can't use Nexus unless I make it portable so you can use it on machines you have no admin privileges on, but, as explained above, that is simply not possible.

Thanks for your explanation, it is much appreciated. I am not making any judgement and of course don't know how the program works in terms of system requirements, it is a great program and was just curious if it was possible.

Apologies if you misunderstood my comment on the wishlist, I thought since you said its not possible right now I'd log in on the wish list as the more appropriate place for my question/request and my 2 cents on why it might make sense to consider beyond one random person asking on your forum... just in case it was something that made sense to revisit in a future version :D

I am very impressed by your program and figured it couldn't hurt to ask because it would be a pleasure to use every day

Thanks for taking the time to respond and making such a great program.
