I have a number of programs in Quick Launch tab in the Workbench, one of them being Paint. Today I was editing a picture but wanted to open a second instance of it. I clicked on the Paint icon but it only brought up the current instance that was already running.

Is there any way to cause a program to open a second instance when I click the icon?

Since you have the 'Do not launch multiple sessions of the same application' setting enabled, WorkShelf will act like the Windows taskbar for pinned applications: if the application is not already running, it will launch it, otherwise it will bring forward one of the open windows belonging to that application.

Obviously, you can always turn off that setting. If you want to leave it on, then there are two ways to force WorkShelf to launch a new instance:

Either press SHIFT when you left click on the icon (but don't forget to let go of the SHIFT key as the app will only launch once you release it)

OR (much simpler!)

Double click the icon.

It took me half an hour to find that setting. I was looking in the Workshelf preferences to see if there was something like that there before posting the original message but didn't see a thing. After you posted the reply, I spent some more time looking through the Workshelf preferences, but finally looked at the preferences for the tab and found it.

I wish you had a user's manual. There's just too much stuff to look through.

That setting is actually where it logically belongs, in the 'Behavior' tab of Dock Property dialogs and the Shelf Properties dialog (under the 'Launching' section).

Since it's a global setting, perhaps I should also add it to the 'More Options' dialog in the General tab of WorkShelf Preferences. Is that where you were looking for it?

And yep, there's a lot of functionality in these applications, so that does require a lot of settings. I do try to organize them the best way I can.

That was one of the places I was looking for it. Yes, it would make sense to put it under the More Options dialog.

I noticed that the More Options button opens a dialog box named Advanced Settings. Perhaps you should rename the button to Advanced Settings to match the dialog box? It confused me for a second thinking I had hit the wrong button. Not a big deal though.

Done and done. I actually renamed the dialog to 'More Options' instead of renaming the button to 'Advanced'. 'Advanced' sounds too intimidating lol
