I logged onto my computer this morning to find NextStart missing and a corrupted Windows menu in its place. The Nextstart.exe program was removed from the Winstep folder. I tried doing a restore and found Nextstart.exe in the archive but I can't copy it back to the folder because it's tagged as containing a virus. Short of uninstalling my antivirus, is there any way around this?

Did this just happen suddenly?!

NextSTART is obviously not virus, hope there is no question about that. From time to time some AV software will report a false positive (unfortunately a lot more common than it should be and affecting a lot of software vendors) but I've never heard of something like that.

What AV software are you using? Also, were you running the v16.6 beta or v16.5?

For instance, HERE is the Virus Total report for the 16.6 version of NextSTART that I just finished compiling.

As you can see, none of the 54 different AV engines found anything suspicious.

And please don't tell me you are running that POS Norton, with their completely idiotic 'Ws.Reputation.1' detection. Someone should have sued that company for loss of business already!

And since we are at it, HERE is the VirusTotal report for WorkShelf v16.6.

And HERE the one for Nexus v16.6.

Both completely clean, of course, not even one false positive.

Yes, this was suddenly. The menu was working at around 11 last night and was gone this morning at 8:30.

I'm using version 16.5 on Windows 10 Pro.

As for Norton, I consider them a "virus" myself and wouldn't allow their software within a mile of my computer!

Update: I determined that it's Windows Defender marking it as a virus. I turned off Defender, copied the file from the archive, and then went into Defender to exclude the file. After turning it back on, it seems to be happily ignoring it.

Panic averted. I can't do without WinStart since it seems to be the only start menu on the planet that works properly.

I have no doubt that Winstep is virus free. It's a pain when other antiviruses mark legitimate programs as a virus. Although I did get a big laugh when the company's antivirus program Kaspersky tagged Windows Explorer as a virus. We switched our antivirus program right after that.

lol.

Hmmm... Windows Defender... that's not good, since someone else mentioned it the other day and it belongs to Microsoft. Other AV vendors can be reached regarding false positives, Microsoft I never tried.

Anyway, v16.6 officially released. Check for updates. :)

So far, best line of 2016. June must be your time for great one-liners! Almost to the day, last year (June 23, 2015) you had the one-liner of 2015 in the following thread. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9582

I totally agree! They're one of the worst on the market. I remember when I had my first computer and I was 100% computer illiterate a relative recommended I DL a XP Pro version of Windows from a File-Sharing site.

Soon afterwards my computer started acting up. I had Norton and ran several scans and it said everything was fine. I knew it wasn't and asked a programmer friend of mine what to do.

He recommended an online scan using Trend Micro and within two seconds it found a Trojan and removed it. I then uninstalled the Pro version (which was not a Genuine one that repeatedly let you know it) and also immediately uninstalled Norton and have never used it again. On top of that, I always tell everyone to never use that garbage. Every time someone has malware on their PC there are always 1-4 programs that are installed and Norton is one of them. I always remove the ones that are installed.

Anytime I update Winstep, I disable my Anti-virus and Firewall to prevent them from causing a problem as they have on a few occasions in the past. Sometimes even decent security software can be overaggressive and cause a problem with legitimate software.

I think the saddest part about Norton is that back in the day, they made some great stuff. Anybody remember Norton Desktop for Windows? Virtual Desktops in Windows 3.1.

Or even older school, Norton Utilities or Desktop for DOS. I used both.

Desktop allowed drag-and-drop file management in an ASCII GUI shell:

Yeah, then Symantec acquired Peter Norton Computing and the whole thing went down the toilet.
