Using the mail checker, can someone provide today's setup information for Windows Live Mail? Do I use IMAP or POP3? I've tried a couple of suggestions but they don't seem to work.

Too, does the mail checker icon show a total number of emails when they are found. If so, does this feature need to be turned on?

Use POP3. The most fundamental thing is to turn on SSL encryption. HERE (Google is you friend  ).

No, it will announce the number of pending messages by voice and show either 'full' or 'empty' (you can then mouse over it to see the extra info in the tooltip). However, it's not the first time someone makes this suggestion and it actually makes sense, so expect to see it implemented in a future release.

I followed the information as provided, but I still get an error message; error indicates that either the user or password information is not correct. Having noted that and thinking I was using the wrong password, I went to www.live.com and entered my user name and password and it worked.

I'm using pop3.
I set the server settings as pop3.live.com.
I used my user name as *********@live.com.
I used my password: ***********.

I still cannot connect. It's probably something simple that I'm overlooking. I'll give it a rest and go back to it later. By the way, my Yahoo email account works as it should. It is to be noted that I have selected SSL connection in the Windows Live Account.

Unfortunately I do not have a live email account, so I can't test this out for myself.

Perhaps someone else reading this might be able to help.

I've tried several settings as found on the Internet. While some settings produced no error messages when I checked the mail, they erred in that they were unable to find email on the server although unread and new.

I"m just not sure about this one.

Wait. If they produced no error, what was the email server's response?

In the Email Checker Settings panel, the Current Account Information section will give you this information. Can you paste the responses you got here with the different settings you tried?

Okay, here is one setting I've tried again today. I got no errors but there were several messages in that inbox and they weren't recognized.

See attachment.

What happens if you try setting it up as "pop" instead of "imap"?

one other thing - for login name, try only putting in the name. Drop the "@" and everything after

Wait, before you do any of that: I think the problem here might be a mis-understanding regarding what the Email Checker does. From the FAQs in the Support section of the Winstep web site:

Q) The Email Checker is displaying the wrong number of messages?

A) The Email Checker is not a full blown email client. The Email Checker simply asks the server how many messages are pending retrieval, and, if there are any, that's what it reports. It also keeps a counter of the number of messages in the server so it will only notify you again when more mail arrives. The notification, however, will tell you the total number of messages still in the server, not the number of messages that arrived between the new and previous notifications.

This counter is reset when the number of messages in the server is less than the value in the counter (which means mail has been retrieved in the mean time) or when you tell the Checker to launch the email client.

The Email Checker has no way of knowing which messages have already been read but left on the server.

Removing the @live.com doesn't make a different with the IMAP settings; I get no errors but the messages aren't detected on the server.

If I use the pop3 information as provided, I get the error message found below.

Try using

pop-mail.outlook.com

instead.

Also found this on the web:

"I logged in the my microsoft account and went to settings > POP and IMAP the option Let devices and apps use POP was set at No. After changing this and saving my settings I was able to connect to my email once again. Problem Solved!!!"

Bingo! This is a winner. I went into settings in my live.com account and changed the POP and IMAP setting to true/on. The email checker works as advertised.

I appreciate your help -- you have really been a source of information.

This problem is now resolved. :D
