is there a way to recover the Nexus settings directly from somewhere on the hard drive? I had to reinstall Windows and would like to restore Nexus to the state it was before, if this is somehow possible.

If you had previously made a backup of your settings, the answer would have been yes.

Now... I'm afraid not. Data is stored in the Windows Registry and that is gone.

I still have the damaged installation. I think I can extract the respective registry part and inject it into the new install!

Look under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\WinSTEP2000

then.
