... New today on the Mini Blog, something somewhat disturbing about privacy, freedom of speech, and - NO! Yes, alas, Proton. If you too are passionate about privacy and freedom of speech, after reading the blog post here please consider letting Proton know by any means you can that it matters to you and that better is expected of them, and indeed demanded of them.

Also new today, the launch of a very promising new Proton app, a Proton Bitcoin Wallet - alas, not yet generally available though and not yet feature complete. And a little more on the generally excellent and very fast Waterfox browser.

Not on the Mini Blog today, just general news here, following extensive discussions in other, private, forums sharing the 'Online Security & Privacy 101' thread, it has become clear that a supplement or even supplements to the 'Windows & macOS' topic is/are definitely needed and indeed demanded that offer further concrete help with securing those OSes. This or these now take precedence over other articles and are being worked on as and when time permits.

The starting page of the Security & Privacy 101 topic can be found HERE.

This time on the Mini Blog, more about the forthcoming supplements to the 'Windows & macOS 101' article, and a lot more on the sorry Proton affair regarding their use of non-privacy services for customer support and feedback. All the same, Proton is the privacy software to stick with - it's far and away the best we have!

On the Mini Blog today, once more we have to return to the sorry Proton affair regarding their use of non-privacy services for customer support and feedback. All the same, Proton is the privacy software to stick with - it's far and away the best we have! In fact, it's the only comprehensive, end-to-end-encrypted and zero-access encrypted fully open source privacy software around.

More privacy and security news soon.

On the Mini Blog this time, news about Proton's Bitcoin app, Proton Wallet, at last becoming more widely available.

Plus, Proton's Privacy Policies and more.

And last but not least, a little something on web browsers.

On the Mini Blog this time, news about the forthcoming Supplementary articles to the 'Windows & macOS 101' one.

Plus, why you should rid yourself of anything Google, and how to do it, and some scary matter for US-based readers.

And a brief mention of Brave web browser and search engine.

Unfortunately, work on the supplementaries has been delayed somewhat due to busy forum duties here lately, as well as other business. I hope to catch up soon. In the meantime, some minor improvements/revisions to the placeholder and the addition of the second placeholder.

Another issue that keeps me on my toes as it were is that elsewhere where this series of articles is also published, there is always some pretty lively discussion of this project - queries, comments, suggestions, requests, etc. This takes place in a separate thread that announces any updates and the like - similar to the 'On Online Security & Privacy 101....' threads here. I am somewhat puzzled that there is none of this at all here, in spite of the huge viewing figures for the project itself as well as the announcement threads. Preferred thread for posting any comments and the like is the one in the 'Off Topic' forum - please feel free. :D

On the Mini Blog this time, security and privacy topics include Social Engineering, Pixel Tracking, and Proton VPN's unique 'Permanent Killswitch' which prevents accidental leaks of your real IP.

This time on the Mini Blog, a quick sideways glance at Proton's roadmaps for their apps for 2025, and a bit of a rant about Proton's droning on about having been founded by scientists.

And of course, we do not neglect the topic of online security and privacy either, with Proton blog posts about 'The spies in your home' (well, some of them anyway), and about protecting your inbox from an email extractor, as well as one about 'Anti-abuse and account security at Proton'.

Hi

I'm not sure if you want me posting a reply here - if not, feel free to move or even delete this post.

Just wanted to say I've been reading your privacy blog slowly piece by piece and it's really good! A lot of what you've posted is in line with my own thinking and discoveries about privacy.

In case you weren't aware of this - Smart TVs seem to be an emerging vector for privacy invasion. Check out this video by Switch To Linux: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6Lnz5j60zI&t=2031s - start at around the 16 minute mark. Apparently it's going to become increasingly difficult to find and purchase a "dumb" TV in the future because the cost of these Smart TVs is being subsidised by advertisers. And the OSes on these TVs will have the ability to use cameras and microphones to actively monitor people in their homes and send that telemetry back to the advertisers for profiling purposes. Scary stuff.

Cheers

Toby

Absolutely fine here. Although, it would of course fit better into the 'Off Topic' forum version of this thread, but never mind. :)

Thank you. More and more people are becoming more security and privacy conscious now, thank goodness. Sadly though, there are still plenty of fools around who use simple passwords like 'Dorothy123', '29071998', and other such idiotic, easily guessable/hackable things and who don't give security and privacy a second thought, or worse, even just don't give a damn! :(

Very scary, indeed! I've been aware of 'Smart TVs' and their spying for more than 6 years now, before the hassle of having to find a non-smart one to replace our broken down old one in about 2018. What a PITA that was! Mind you, with the smart-ass TVs at the time, you had to actually activate the smart features, otherwise they functioned as a non-smart one.

Anyway, fear not, apparently most can be set up with Proton VPN and other Proton apps to stop them spying identifiable data. Proton really should do an extensive blog post on this topic, and on the other 'smart' spies around the house, especially also smart meters (electricity and gas) that are being pushed in some countries inc. the UK. (I did post about the latter in the Mini Blog a while back.)

Somehow, I often feel that Canonical should revisit their idea of making Ubuntu a universal OS for all devices! (Of course, whether they have the resources is another matter, alas.)

Ahh sorry, I wasn't aware of the Off Topic version. I'll stop posting here (good point about Proton though!)

No problem re: the 'Off Topic' version. :)

Proton is always 'on point' as it were, in every respect. Even the free versions are pretty good. The paid versions of Proton VPN and Proton Mail really provide a 'primary' firewall and AV/anti-malware etc. in a way. Plus, if you take the Proton Unlimited option, you get loads more besides, including extra security and privacy protection inc. their Sentinel and Dark Web Monitoring. And it all covers up to 10 devices. So say TV, desktop, laptop, phone/tablet (Android and iOS/padOS), and whatever else you want to throw at it. 8)

This time on the Mini Blog, news about the forthcoming Supplementaries to 'Windows & macOS 101', and some comments re: Pale Moon and LibreWolf web browsers.

The importance of secure passwords and of the fight for our online privacy and security get a couple of paragraphs, and a brief mention of moving the 2024 Mini Blog to archive.

To close, Proton blog posts on 'How to manage passwords on iPhone and improve your security', the Graphene OS for Android users, and one on 'How to build Privacy First AI' - misnomer if ever there was one.
