I have Winstep installed on two PCs with 4k displays - and it has always scaled just fine. Recently one PC starts up with a wrongly scaled (Tiny) dock, though the Sub-docks are right. Within a few moments of use it scales itself correctly and all is good, but I cannot identify a specific action that recovers it.

Not a major issue, but it would be good if it didn't happen.

Win 11, V24.4 - license current.

Cheers James C

What are the differences between the two PCs?

Can you please post a picture of your desktop with the tiny dock?

What is the screen DPI (Windows Settings -> System -> Display -> Scale) in both PCs? Is any of them running more than one monitor?

From what I understood this only happens after a reboot, right? In the PC affected with this issue, open Nexus Ultimate Preferences and go to the General tab. Is 'Enable Fast Boot' checked? If so, does clearing it fix the issue (or vice-versa if it is unchecked)?

The affected PC is a Dell 8950 running two monitors. The Dock is on a 4k 3840 x 2160 screen amd I also have an HD screen off to one side. The other is an XPS 16 9640 laptop running the local screen only 3840 x 2400.

On the 8950 the scaling is set to 3840 x 2160 scalled to 175% and 1920 x 1080 (portrait) on the HD screen scaled at 100%, -I have always run them this way since before the issue occured.

Fastboot is not enabled so I will try it the other way round. I will try to get a screenshot on my next reboot, I think I will have to try my phone as I am pretty sure the issue would resolve while I set up a screenshot.

Please note that you should never, ever use an email address where it is exposed to the public, and least of all as a user name. Best solution - open a new user account here with an anonymous user name and a different email address. Then we can transfer your previous posts to that account and get rid of the original posts and account. Still, the damage may already have been done, so be prepared for lots of spam and possibly phishing emails. :(

Well, I'm afraid deletion will have to wait for Jorge - can only be done by someone with admin powers, sorry. I'll try and get his attention with a message.

[Edit] :Moderator's note - OP's user name changed to current one, losing the mail part - nexter: [/Edit]

I didn't even notice he was using his email address as his user name or I would have done something about it eheh

I changed the username, that ought to do it without having to delete accounts etc

You can simply press the PRT SCR (Print Screen) key on your keyboard.

Have restarted three times, phone at the ready and the issue has not repeated. I reckon you fixed it telepathically! Will keep an eye on it.

LOL

It's just like that joke about the three engineers (electrical, mechanical and IT) and the car not starting. To cut a long story short, the IT engineer eventually chimes in "why don't we just get out of the car and in again?"

Computers...!

LOL! Yeah, computers indeed! And the car still didn't start, showing the IT guy for the idiot that most or many of them are, for if they weren't no corporate or other institutional body would still be using Windows servers nor especially desktops! On the other hand, a reboot often does solve problems with computers, especially Windows ones. :D

BTW Jorge, suspected you hadn't noticed the user name. :) Glad it's all sorted. Now, ideally he wants to change his email address, and not just here either.

@jfcawte - If I may offer you some advice, first and foremost get yourself a new email address and one that is properly private and secure. I would highly recommend Proton Mail, which is not only free of cost and independently audited open source but also comes with Proton Calender and more - https://proton.me . It's also easy to migrate all messages, calendar and contacts from your old account. And don't use any part of your real name in your user name. Next, I'd also recommend getting Proton's Proton Pass password manager, also free, which gives you added benefits for your email like more email aliases. To make your online life even more secure and private, you can get the - again free - Proton VPN.

Once you've got email sorted, change your email address for the forums to your new one, or preferably to an alias.

Hope this helps. :D

Oops it did it again -screen shot here

Will try switching to fastboot

This is an inconvenience not a crisis so no need to 'bust a gut' as we Brits say.

Another occurence, note the tiny main dock and the normal size subdock. The problem resolved on the next mouseover. Heres the screengrab

Whatever is causing the issue to only lift its ugly head now (probably some race conditions at startup) I bet it is related to the mismatched screen DPI. Winstep applications are high DPI compatible, what they are not is *per-monitor* high DPI compatible.

What this means in practice is that ALL monitors MUST have the same screen DPI (e.g. all 100% or all 125%), otherwise Windows will literally begin lying to the Winstep application about screen resolutions etc, which may result in what you are experiencing (and other screen positioning, etc, problems).

If you can set both monitors to the same screen DPI I bet the issue goes away.
