Hi,
Since Windows 11 24H2 I can no longer make to display the sytray, neither with Workshelf nor with winstep. It worked well with previous Windows versions.

As you're hardly a newbie (regd. here for 8 years!) - RTFM! Or rather, do a simple forum search - there are plenty of recent posts on exactly the same issue and related ones.

Nexter is an old Linux user so he will bite your neck clean off for not Reading the Friskin Manual first lol

As stated in many posts, the problem is 24H2. Microsoft has been making many changes to core parts of Windows and that includes the system tray.

Unfortunately 24H2 is so buggy that even Microsoft is not offering it globally yet - which means I still didn't get my hands on it yet to see first hand what is going on and try to find workarounds.

These day and age I REALLY do NOT recommend that you jump head first into ANYTHING Microsoft has recently released. After firing their QA staff (true fact) they seem to have unleashed a bunch of unexperienced recently graduate coders on Windows.

Never been into biting off necks Jorge, or anything else. :P Been known to rip people a new sphincter occasionally in the past, but these days I can't really be arsed. ;) I might bark or roar occasionally, but that's as far as it goes nowadays. :D

LOL

Just found out one of the reasons why I am not seeing 24H2 being offered on Windows update here (the games mentioned are EXTREMELY popular, which just shows how Microsoft is basically doing ZERO testing before officially releasing a major Windows update). I have Valhalla, Origins and Odyssey installed in my PC and am not about to uninstall them just because Microsoft can't do anything right these days.

The list of issues (official and non-official) in 24H2 is longer than my arm (and in very tiny typeface) - not to mention that the infamous Recall (biggest threat to user privacy EVER) seems to be mandatory in 24H2.

Anyway, here is the relevant tidbit.

November 2024

Some Ubisoft games might stop responding on Windows 11, version 24H2 devices

After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter issues with some Ubisoft games. These games might become unresponsive while starting, loading or during active gameplay. In some cases, users might receive a black screen. The affected games are:

Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Assassin's Creed Origins
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Star Wars Outlaws
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Note: Ubisoft released a temporary mitigation for Star Wars Outlaws to prevent the game from failing and stop responding. You might still experience some performance issues.

To safeguard your Windows update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices with these games installed. These devices will not be offered to install Windows 11, version 24H2 via the Windows Update release channel.

And don't forget Co-Pilot, other parts of the OS itself, and of course Outlook! :/

With the help of Proton VPN and other Proton components, as well as a few other utilities, the barstewart MS gets next to nothing from me other than false IPs and other stuff. How it would be under Win 11 (let alone 12!) I'm not sure and I'm not about to want to find out.

Well, you can see why I only use Win 10 for specialised hardware support and related software and only when absolutely necessary. Otherwise, I'm happily sticking to Linux, but again with Proton VPN etc. of course.

Where can I find the manual referred to in the second comment?

It took a bit of work but I was able to get the systray to appear with 24H2.

There isn't one - it was a figure of speech. :)

Can you please share the solution?

I solved the systray issue and all Windows 11 privacy invasion "features" by rolling back to Windows 10 Enterprise (PM me if you want more info about that).

Here is a useful resource to monitor what M$ is doing with their patches:
https://www.askwoody.com/ms-defcon-system/ ... we are currently @ Defcon 4 thanks to M$'s recent issues. That site has a huge body of M$ related info too in their forums, newsletters etc.

Another good security tool for current and older Windows versions is:
https://0patch.com/index.html (even the free version patches a lot of stuff missed by M$'s security updates).

HTH :)

Those links seem well worth exploring and certainly shall do so when I get the time. :D

Tx. I shall, I'm sure. Once I can make a little time, alas. :(
