Yes, please. :P

First, it would be nice to have the ability to choose custom icons for each type of drive (fixed, removable, network, cdrom) -- or even individual drives...[snip]...Third, the ability to customise each drive's text...

Many of your requests would be solved with a 'disk monitor' module/widget. It's been on the to-do list for some time... :)

Fourth, the ability to show the icons centred on the shelf

I think this will happen at about the same time the Shelf is given the ability to be vertical instead of just horizontal.

skagon wrote:
Fifth, and perhaps most important, update the drives more frequently than "on show".

Agreed.

skagon wrote:
Sixth, the ability to change tabs of the shelf using the left-right scroll-wheel 'clicks'.

Agreed. We already have vertical scroll-wheel support, this would be a nice addition too.

skagon wrote:
Seventh, the ability to hide the tab bar completely, if there's only one tab on the shelf.

That would be a dock, lol. What I see comming, with the advent of multiple Shelves, is the ability to have 'drawers' (i.e. single tab Shelves which open perpendicular to their position on the screen, a bit like sub-docks do by default).

skagon wrote:
Eighth, when the shelf shows, it's 'stealing' focus from the active program. I'd like it to return focus to the same program, if no icons are clicked (i.e. in the case where it's activated by accident).

The Shelf getting the focus when activated is by design. I'll have to think about the pheasibility and usefulness of this.

skagon wrote:
Tenth, the ability to show two tabs at once, if there is enough space. For example, a shelf that spans the screen width, can have the "drives" tab to the left and another tab with some shortcuts to the right.

This would be pretty confusing, IMO.

So... kudos for a programme well made, mate! Very nice job!

Thanks. :D

skagon wrote:
Oh, one last thing: could you also add a mouse-over effect with just a simple outline glow, or a radial glow behind the icon? Just a plain fade-in/fade-out...

You already have 14 different mouse over effects for the Shelf...

Can you give me a visual example of what you mean?

Actually, that would be great, if you can get it to show all the drives that exist in "My Computer" automatically. All the "Disk Monitor" plug-ins I have seen on other docks, show only one icon and are targeted on only one drive, and also that drive has to exist. You can't have disk monitor for any USB drive, for example, which may or may not be connected, and have its icon disappear and reappear when it's connected.
Actually, before I saw the new version of Nexus with the shelf and the ability to show all the drives, I was looking into the SDK of ObjectDock widgets, and trying to find out if I could create a widget which produces more than one icon on the dock. Unfortunately, the entire substructure of ObjectDock is based upon the "one widget = one icon" principle. Thankfully, I found Nexus...

Again, yes, if you could give me a dock that shows the drives (i.e. "My Computer" contents)... If there's only one tab on the shelf, what's the purpose of showing the tab's name? It's just taking up vertical space.

Fair enough...

Sure, only I don't have Paintshop installed here, so I'll make do with what I found on the web.

Like those images, only... single colour and circular. Simple back glow! ;)
Of course, the icons won't be all black (like it just happened to be in those examples), but appear normally.

In any case, thank you for your interest in my ideas and your reply. I really appreciate it.

Okay, I thought of another few things:

[lost count] Add an option of auto spacing for the icons on the shelf, so that the text can fit in the defined number of lines. Example, if I define 1 line of text per icon, maybe the icon spacing can be set to [auto] to make text always visible.

[lost count + 1] Make the pop-up balloons skinnable, so their appearance isn't different than the rest of the shelf/dock.

[lost count + 2] Give some options as to where the pop-up balloon appears. It could he under the pointer position, or a fixed position relative to the icon which is being hovered.

Also, some more things: one, in the settings, pressing [ESC] doesn't cancel the current dialog.
Two, if the shelf is on top, there is some confusion with the placement of the icon, as per the %themename%.wsw file and variables BodyTopTile and BodyBottomTile. For example, I can't seem to be able to get the icons to *almost* touch the top side of the shelf (which Nexus thinks it's the bottom, because the tabs are on "Bottom of the shelf"). Reducing thoes variables to zero (0) gets the icon text out of the shelf, but the top of the icons is still far away from the top of the shelf. Any explanation why that happens, or am I just missing something in the config files of the theme?
[EDIT] never mind that last question, I found out what was happening [/EDIT]

By the way, I got rid of the tabs. :D [happy mode] Setting the TabsPartOfBody to False, the tabs go outside the shelf, and then I'm lucky because you allow the name of a tab to be null. So, tabs begone! Also, changing the icon files of the "hide shelf" and "preferences" buttons to a plain empty fully transparent icon, gets rid of the buttons as well!
It may not be an "official" option, but mate, thanks! Your programme is truly (**almost**) perfect! ;P

I'm newbie, so I haven't learned all features yet. For this reason my current wishes list is short... but probably I'll back here soon  .

1. Item properties contains setting "Run" with following options:
- Normal window
- Minimized
- Maximized
Is this possible add "In system tray" to these settings (or at least in NextSTART tray when it launched)?

2. You have long list of internal commands, and sometimes it hard find appropriated item. What do you think about grouping similar commands into categories? Additional, command list is sorted by alphabetical order and after localization similar items could be located in different places on list in other UI language than English.

3. Context menus have usually fixed width and for this reason some localized menu items could be truncated. Is this possible enable function for stretching menu by UI string length? However, I fear it could generate issues with some themes.

For far future:

4. Multiple and vertical WorkShelves. I found today this idea on your ToDo list, but anyway I decided pointed it here.

Best,
Janusz

I've got another request, which could also be seen as a minor bug of sorts.
It has to do with both the clock and the weather widgets, and anything else that includes date and time.
You see, you obviously take the date, time, day names, month etc. from the system, which results in getting everything in the language dictated by the system location (unless someone specifically went in the Windows' settings and changed the date format to something else). My point is, if the user has selected a certain language, shouldn't the dates appear in that language too? Like, I'm using English, but the dates show up in Greek. That's kinda annoying. I'd like an option, or at least, show dates, times, months and shit in the same language as the Nexus user interface.
What do you think, mate?

Unfortunately dates, time and their formats (e.g.; dd/mm/yy or mm/dd/yy, HH:MM or hh:mm AM/PM, etc) are provided by the system locale. So they will always appear in the format associated to the region/country/language selected in your Windows version.

Surely you can provide an override for that... ;)
Check CultureInfo and CultureInfo.DateTimeFormat...
Cheers!

First, CultureInfo is a .NET class, not a Win32 API call, second, the user might have customized the system date/time format to suite his tastes better and CultureInfo disregards that, third, I suppose I could, but I won't. :P

Sorry, but this time around what you are suggesting has very limited interest, would piss more users than it would please, and has serious potential for creating trouble on several areas - I've dealt with localization issues before and I won't go there unless I absolutely need to. :D

P.S. And don't call me Shirley!

(my small tribute to Leslie Nielsen)

Hey, no worries. Again, I've always been annoyed by the greek dates but, in my infinite wisdom, it just never came to me to change it. Maybe it was dread at how Windows used to weave together locale, keyboards, units and other location based shit, in previous Windows versions.
By the way, you still haven't said which language and API you're using for Nexus. Personally, I'd like to see a Direct2D version... GPU acceleration FTW!

Oh, incidentally... here's my latest 'skin' graft of Nexus... looks nice, no?

Oh, just one more idea that I had... at least until you can implement the left-right scroll-wheel navigation of the shelf tabs.
You can set a shortcut for each tab, but there's no shortcut for changing tabs, like [Ctrl]+[Tab] and [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Tab] in Firefox. How about it? ;)
[Ctrl]+[Tab] ---------> next tab
[Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Tab] -> previous tab
...or just [Ctrl]+[Tab] cycling through them...

Just an idea... :)

I would love to see layers support for the skinning process :D

.....and also multiple modes for the modules (i.e. full and compact mode)

Layers for the skinning process?
What's that? Layers where?

Anyhow... I don't remember if I've asked this, but... wouldn't it be nice to be able to have two identical modules with different settings, like two weather modules, one for... I don't know... Athens Greece and another for Cupertino California (worrying about Steve Jobs' well-being). :P
Or two or three clocks, for that matter...

Ignore him - I've sent him back down into the dungeon.

Danilo, for those who don't know, is one of the best skinners around - the Winstep Brisa theme was actually made by him, all those years ago.

That's already in the to-do list. It will require a major internal re-organization of the structures related to the modules, though, which is why it hasn't been implemented yet.
