Long ago I mentioned that the email checker doesn't allow some characters in the password. My password is a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Anything in the range of 33-255 Decimal (I think) could be used in the password. Could this issue be addressed.

Thanks,
Grouch

Grouch, unfortunately the programming language Winstep applications are developed in uses ANSI code pages internally instead of Unicode.

As such, there are certain non-standard characters that cannot be used for passwords, etc... due to limitations of the platform itself, nothing can be done about it, sorry...

Jorge,

At least the normal ! @ # $ % ^ & * could be supported, right?
Characters 33-122 should be in the ANSI range.

Thanks,
Grouch

They are, as far as I know? I just tried typing some of those in and, even though I can't see them (they're replaced with * for obvious reasons) the input box seems to have accepted the special characters alright.

What is happening there?

As I recall, it accepted my typing them in, but what you passed on to the server was evidently garbled. It was a long time ago and I changed my password to something that worked with your checker.

Thanks,
Grouch

Jorge,

Another issue with the email checker is the notification of new mail. If I happen to be out of the room when a message is detected and announced, I won't get another notification. It appears to be a one-shot notification.

Is there any way to put a small(10 pixels) flashing, always-on-top, LED-type thing as an adjunct to the existing notification. Something similar to Android on a Nexus 7 tablet? After the user retrieves their mail, the light goes out.

Thanks,
Grouch

Jorge,

What I'm looking for is a little flashing indicator that would pop up over the active window. Placement should be at the users preference. A little animated GIF that requires no further monitoring should do the trick.

Thanks,
Grouch

Grouch, when new email is detected the icon changes to show there is new mail waiting for you.

Yes, but I have my mail on a sub-dock since I have two email clients that I use. That means I have to hover the mouse over the sub-dock icon to see it. I guess I'll have to re-arrange things to bring the notification icon down to the main dock so that it's visible. That's do-able. My problem is that If I'm in an app for several hours, I may not expose the dock for a long time(auto-hide the dock). If the notification came when I was on a coffee run or potty-stop, I wouldn't see it. Never mind.

Thanks,
Grouch

Well, for a bit I entertained the idea of automatically popping up a hidden dock with an Email Checker module in it when new mail arrives (as it happens when an application in the tasklist area of the dock asks for attention and starts flashing), but I'm not sure if that wouldn't just become annoying...

I thought about re-announcing every 15 minutes, but that would work only if it were not in a predefined "Silent Period". The only other option is to auto-launch the email client(I've been avoiding that one). That's why I thought an unobtrusive little 20 pixel flasher would be nice. As I said, never mind.

Thanks,
Grouch

Just a suggestion.

If you do not autohide the task bar, you could use the Email Checker systray icon for this purpose.

Right click Email icon on dock and select Email Checker Settings.
Check the box at Show icon in system tray.
Click OK

Open system tray (to show hidden icons, usually a small arrow) and click on Customize.
Look for WorkShelf icon in the list (with text saying xx Messages, xx Bytes) and set Behaviors to Show icon and notifications.
Click OK

Now you have an icon in your system tray which changes when message(s) arrive and which only changes back to the original icon after you retrieve your messages.

@Henk1956

That does put me in the right direction, but since I auto-hide both the taskbar and the dock, it doesn't solve it. I would have to bump the edge of the screen to cause either the taskbar or dock to appear, thus showing an icon indicating status. If I'm involved in an app, I try to avoid bumping the bottom of the screen.

Thanks,
Grouch

I found a cheap and dirty fix. I created a VBScript that does nothing but create a dialog box stating "You have New Mail". I set the script as the email client and set Nexus to automatically launch the client.

Thanks,
Grouch
