Hello, I am a registered Nexus Ultimate user.

I have recently installed an Nvidia GTX980TI card, and I have noticed that, if Winstep is active, the Nvidia control panel crashes every time.

If I exit Nexus, the control panel opens just fine.

Do you have any suggestions for this?

Thanks.

I also have a Nvidia graphics card but I'm not experiencing the problem you've described. You should try Advanced SystemCare. DON'T INSTALL IT UNTIL AFTER YOU FINISH READING EVERYTHING I'VE SAID IN THIS POST. http://www.iobit.com/en/advancedsystemcarefree.php It has an AWESOME subprogram called Driver Booster. I've been using it for about a year now and besides my PC, I've cured problems from many other PC's with it. Driver Booster finds all of the latest drivers for your PC and will install the ones you chose to update. I think all of them should always be installed but it's good to know that option is available for that one in a million. You should run a scan with it every week or two to see if any new ones have come out. This, and Unchecky, (which I will get to) are the two best programs I've come across that exceptionally aid in the well-being of a PC.

Advanced SystemCare has a myriad of subprograms available. You have the option to not activate them. I tried some of them out and Driver Booster is the only one I use. My opinion is DO NOT chose the option to install IObit. It will cause you nothing but headaches!

Before you install Advanced SystemCare to aid in preventing IObit from installing itself on your PC, I recommend that you and everyone else in the universe that has a PC install Unchecky. http://unchecky.com/ It prevents programs from sneaking unwanted programs and toolbars on your PC while in the process of installing a new program. It forces a menu that alerts you to the crapware and gives you the option to uncheck it.

Advanced SystemCare also has a Startup Manager subprogram that I'm going to finally try out. I've been using Autoruns.

Hello, thanks for the reply. Actually my driver and bios are all up to date.
I think this is mostly a problem with my particular graphics card which is a very recent model.

Thanks a lot for pointing to the Unchecky utility though, it will come in very handy for my customers.

Winstep applications do NOT inject code into other processes, nor do they tamper with other processes in any way.

What is *probably* happening is exactly the opposite - some buggy nVidia driver/applet injecting itself into every other process address space (perhaps as a context menu extension) and then causing the Nvidia Control Panel to crash for some God-knows-what reason if Nexus is running.

It's not the first time nVidia has caused trouble for Winstep applications.

So, is there anything can be done about it, or should I just live with it?

Cooperdale, as I type this, a new Nvidia driver update is being installed. It notified me. Don't know if it's the same one you'll get since you have a different graphics card than I do.

I'm glad that you like Unchecky. It's a great program. I still highly recommend that you install Driver Booster via Advanced SystemCare. I will guarantee that if you install and run Driver Booster that it will find driver updates that you were not able to find otherwise. It might even fix the issue you're having. It definitely won't hurt to try.

If you do try it, I'm pretty certain you'll thank me for that as well. :D

Looks like the new drivers have made things slightly better.

I'd like to try Driver Booster, although I never liked Iobit software for its tendency to install tons of crap you don't want. I guess Unchecky should allow me to keep it clean.

Cooperdale, did you install Driver Booster and has the issue been resolved?

Yes, I installed it, there were some drivers to update. The issue has gotten better with the latest Nvidia drivers, there are still some crashes but it's rare.

Since I've seen it's an Nvidia problem, I guess it was my mistake to post it here.

No, it wasn't a mistake to post it here even though it wasn't the Winstep program that caused it.

That's what the forum is for, especially when you're new to Winstep products. I'm sure your post caused many users to know about Unchecky and Driver Booster which should aid in the reduction of issues that might lead a user into incorrectly thinking that a Winstep product caused a crash or other abnormal behavior.

I've realized over the years that in most cases some other program or driver is the culprit but posting here is still the best thing to do to help get to the bottom of it.

There are others here that are more knowledgeable than me, but once in a while I can help. :)

What kind of a graphics card did you have before the 980?

Have you considered a possible driver conflict for your troubles? Are you sure you removed all traces of the AMD graphics drivers, prior to installing the nVidia ones?
