I previously under-utilized Winstep Xtreme, then got away from it altogether for 2-3 years. I'm just coming back and want to maximize the experience this time. Right now I'm just using the trial, but will renew my subscription in the next few days if some of my experiments turn out as I hope.

I am unsure if I will be able to do one thing I hope. I am running Winstep Xtreme on a Windows Surface Pro tablet under Win10. Much of the time I have it docked to a lovely 27" monitor; other times I am squinting at the 10" screen in tablet mode. I have decided that it would be best to use Win10's virtual desktop facility to have different desktops for desktop and tablet use. I am just beginning to ponder this and haven't yet had time to examine the strengths and weaknesses of Windows' virtual desktops.

Given the vast differences in screen sizes, it would be ideal if I could configure Winstep Xtreme to behave differently on different desktops. For instance, on the 27" monitor I have plenty of real estate and can reserve space for the dock, whereas on the 10" display it would be better for it to autohide. Also, I have room to add more icons on the 27" and would probably have to go with a more "minimal" approach in tablet mode. In other words, I basically would like to apply different Winstep themes to different virtual desktops.

In short...is this doable? Are there links to any resources that could help me navigate this the first time?

Many thanks in advance to Jorge and the entire community.

Did I do/say something wrong? It looks like mine is the only recent post to not receive any replies? :|

Ooops, sorry, didn't mean to make you feel that way.

It's just that the questions you raise are a bit complicated and I've been really busy these past few days.

Essentially what you seem to be asking for is not really possible. A different configuration applied automatically when you switch to a different resolution, etc...

Being a multi-monitor user myself I'm also not very familiar with virtual desktops - and given all the different solutions out there (the Windows 10 VDM being one of the most basic) it would only make sense to tie that type of functionality to a VDM native to Winstep applications (which will never happen now because the Windows 10 VDM, being tied to the OS, will be 'good enough' for most people).

Anyway, I'll revisit your post later on when I have a bit more time available and will try to provide a more sensible reply. :)

No need to apologize, Jorge. I understand busy. And I suspected you would answer as you did concerning virtual displays. Though I have spent little time with them, the whole virtual desktop scenario in its various incarnations seems generally underpowered. So I guess I need to look at other solutions.

So here's my next thought. I wasn't really talking about different resolutions...just different screen sizes (10" vs. 27") at the same resolution. So I'm wondering if perhaps a better option would be to set up multiple user accounts, one configured for desktop use and one for tablet mode. It would be a little more cumbersome to switch between them, but I wouldn't be popping back and forth frequently during, just once at the beginning of a computing session. Am I correct in assuming that WinStep products can be configured differently on different user accounts?

Yes, installed themes are shared among all users, but each user has their own independent settings.
