Nexus Ultimate v16.05.1035

At every boot-up the hidden windows taskbar flickers erratically into partial view at the bottom of the screen.

I have the "Hide Windows Tasbar" option turned ON - but I don`t recall it doing this when I first started using Nexus.

Maybe there is a combination of settings I am not aware of to make this not happen, or I have inadvertently changed something to cause it ?!

It`s quite annoying, visually at least.

What version of Windows are you running?

As you know there is no option in Windows to 'hide the taskbar' (i.e.; actually make it invisible) so Microsoft never made allowances for the Windows taskbar to be permanently hidden.

Because of this, under certain situations, the Windows taskbar will make itself visible even if a 3rd party application has previously hidden it.

Nexus hides the taskbar with two actions: first it programmatically sets it to auto-hide (otherwise maximized windows would still not be able to use the space occupied by it even though you couldn't see the taskbar), second it actually hides the taskbar window.

Because certain things will make the taskbar visible again (for instance, a new icon appearing in the notification area) just doing this is not enough.

The taskbar must be constantly monitored from then on to see if it has become visible again. If so, it is immediately hidden again. This can sometimes result in the behavior you described: the taskbar momentarily flickering on and off view as both Windows and Nexus fight for control.

If this did not happen before, you will have to try to figure out if something you installed in the mean time is making changes to the taskbar during start up that would result in it becoming visible again.

Anyway, visually annoying as it might be, it apparently (accordingly to you) only happens at system startup, so I think it's something that can be (although grudgingly) put up with.

Hello yet again...

Win 7 x64

I tested by disabling everything related to the boot process, Run items, Services and Tasks - except for Nexus obviously, it still happened.

So to satisfy my curiosity (and reassure myself I wasn`t going insane) I rolled back to an older install of Windows which had Nexus 16.3 on it and it did not happen.

So it appears to be something that happened between 16.3 and 16.5.

I`ll just deal with it rather than downgrade :D

You realize you just shot down my theory about this not being related to the new Nexus release at all, don't you? lol

Hmmm, I'm not aware of anything I changed in the new release that could be related to this... unless...

Do you have the dock set to 'Auto-Hide at startup'?

I was almost certain myself that it was a 3rd party component that was responsible....

something updating in the "Notification Area" or maybe even the Start Menu, so I was kind of bemused to see this oddity occur after disabling everything (and even more than was possibly necessary, such as various system services etc)

I have 3 individual docks operational:

1 replacing the "Quick Launch" - at the bottom
1 replacing the "Notification Area/System Tray" - at the bottom

and one standard dock at the top with several icons that would have normally been on the Desktop.

(Nexus is being used to replace the base functions of the Windows desktop while on a higher DPI screen for better visibility - docks are basically static)

No docks are set to autohide.
The Shelf is disabled.
All animations disabled.

I should add that the flickering effect does occasionally appear at other times than just the post-boot sequence, I haven`t noticed it related to any specific action and it is very infrequent.

I can only imagine it`s "Explorer.exe" itself that`s triggering activity in the taskbar in some way - as I saw nothing else unusual during a brief look at Process Explorer whilst this flickering occurred.

It`s just one of those unexplained mysteries I guess !
