 Post subject: Got a Nexus update 2/5/22 - but its not recognized -- SOLVED

I've been using Nexus Ultimate for two years. I've purchased an update subscription the first year and now again the second year. But this time I get a reminder window telling me to update my subscription. And the new expiration date doesn't appear on the Preferences>about page. In addition, I can't see where to download the software -- that may be the reason I'm having this problem.

First off, there is no download link on the website for Nexus Ultimate - one is sent along with your key file. (And IIRC it's only valid for one download or a limited time, not sure.) Also you should have saved your original download of Ultimate on your hard drive or somewhere else safe.

The problem you describe looks, more likely than not, like you didn't apply the keyfile correctly. Please return to the email that contained your key file. This will have detailed instructions on how to apply it. It will also contain a download link.

Thanks for the reply. After my first submission I had discovered the download link, so I did all of that once, and per your suggestion, I repeated the entire process: Downloaded the zip file, extracted its contents, reinstalled Nexus Ultimate, and double clicked the key file. Same problem. Although the software is shown as registered to me, I still see the outmoded message "License key is valid for all upgrades released until February 2, 2021." It should say "February 2, 2023."

are you sure you didnt download the key from an old mail (previous registration?)

And are you sure you're not ALSO running the free version of Nexus instead of or together with Nexus Ultimate?

What does the logo say in the About tab? Nexus only or Nexus Ultimate?

I'm glad you're back, Jorge. Sorry, no solution as yet. I used the key file I got from the latest BMT Micro email. And the about window shows Nexus Ultimate.

And (masking the user name) what does it say at the bottom of the logo? Or does it say it is unregistered? It will either say it is unregistered or that the license key is valid for updates released until <date>

It says "This software is registered to" [me]. Below that is says "License key is valid for all upgrades released until February 2, 2021."

Ok, I understand the problem now.

You need to replace the old license key with the new license key you got when you renewed last.

I forwarded the email with the latest key to your email address via Winstep support, in the email body it will say "THIS LICENSE KEY IS VALID FOR ALL Nexus Ultimate updates released, or to be released, until February 4 2023"

Just follow the instructions to register with the new key as you did with the original key, it will (should) replace your old license key. All going well you will get a dialog box thanking you for registering and the date in the About tab should change to reflect the date range of the new key.

Well, I first assumed I needed only to move the attached key file to the correct folder. I did that -- no change, same problem: The final date for upgrades is still Feb. 2, 2021. I had already repeated the instructions in full two times in the last couple of weeks, so I didn't repeat downloading Nexus Ultimate or registering it again.

I just went through the entire process for the third time -- still no help.

The key file needs to have the file extension changed from .wsxkey to .key in order to be recognized as a valid license key.

The Winstep application associates the .wsxkey extension with itself so that when you double click on the "ultimate.wsxkey" file (the recommended procedure) it will automatically move the key file to the proper Licenses folder and change its file extension to .key.

So, simply copying the file in the email you got to the Licenses folder is not going to do it - at the very least it would have to replace/overwrite your old license key file, and as you can see that is NOT happening.

Registering is NORMALLY a simple process of DOUBLE CLICKING the key file. That's it, you do NOT need to do anything else. There are CLEAR instructions on the email with the license key as to what you should do.

You say you went through the entire process a third time, but you neither describe what you did nor what happened. I suspect you tried again to do it manually without changing the file extension and overwriting the old key file.

So, please do it this way:

1. Open Preferences and navigate to the Advanced tab.
2. Click the Troubleshooting Options button.
3. In the dialog that pops up, click "Restore File Associations" button.
4. Close the dialog and Preferences.
5. *Double click* the license key file on the email I sent you.
6. Assuming Nexus Ultimate is running, you should get a dialog thanking you for registering. Double check the date in the About tab of Preferences has now changed.

If you do not get the expected results you MUST explain in detail what you did and EXACTLY what happened ***at every step***. "I just went through the entire process for the third time - still no help" doesn't tell me ANYTHING, the lack of detail is just going to get us frustrated and no closer to a resolution. :D

Remember, I am not there looking over your shoulder to understand what is going wrong or see what you are doing - you will have to be very explicit and detailed about that for me to have a clue about what might be going wrong, so I can help you out.

Sorry for my lack of description. I hope this is better.
(1) I exit Nexus. The dock disappears.
(2) I download Nexus Ultimate, install it, and restart it. The dock reappears.
(3) I copy Nexus.wsxkey from the email attachment to the Nexus folder.
(4) I double click the Nexus.wsxkey file in the Nexus folder. The file is
opened in the Universal Viewer app.
(5) I close the Universal Viewer window.
(5) I right-click on the Nexus logo on the dock. The context menu opens. I
don't see any message about thanks for registering.
(6) I click on the Preferences option. The Nexus Preferences dialogue is
displayed. The logo is the Nexus Ultimate logo, the line "This software
is registered to" [me] is shown, and the message about upgrades is
printed in red, displaying the date as February 2, 2021.

I notice that in your latest reply you mention an ultimate.wsxkey file. I don't see that anywhere. Maybe that's what's wrong? Or was that just a slip of the tongue? I wouldn't blame you if it was. You must be hassled catching up.

After posting the above message, I tried to follow these instructions in the email:

1) Rename the NEXUS.WSXKEY file to NEXUS.KEY.

2) Open the Nexus Ultimate Preferences screen.

3) Navigate to the Register tab.

4) Click on the 'Open Folder' button.

5) Copy the renamed file NEXUS.KEY to the Licenses folder.

6) Press the 'Register' button on the Registration tab.

Now, there is no "register" tab in the preferences dialogue. So I can't try that.

That's because Nexus Ultimate is already registered with the old license key.

When you copied the nexus.key file in step 5 to the Licenses folder, did Explorer prompt you to overwrite a file? If so, we are good, restart Nexus Ultimate and check the date again.

If not, please post a screenshot of the contents of the Licenses folder in Details view.

Also, are you running Windows 10 or Windows 11?

I didn't copy the nexus.key file to the Licenses folder. That's step 5 of the procedure, and I didn't get past step 3.

A screenshot of the Licenses folder contents would show only one nexus.key file, transferred in 2020 (that one worked).

I am running Windows 10.
