Hi all,

I’ve been using Winstep for years and love how smooth and customizable it is. But I was wondering — has anyone ever suggested adding simple script support (like JavaScript or Python) for widget behavior or animations?

It could open up cool ideas like:

Widgets reacting to system events (CPU usage, time, weather).

Custom transitions or triggers made by users.

Would that be technically possible, or would it affect performance/security too much?
I think even limited scripting hooks could make Winstep feel more dynamic and creative.

Curious what others think!

One word : Rubbish!

That was the short answer. Longer answer - you must be a spam bot or you'd know better, surely. First off, Winstep apps don't have 'widgets' - you're describing what's properly termed 'Modules'. Furthermore, Winstep Modules inherently react to system events, otherwise they would be - err - useless!

While nothing is impossible, this would be a whole heap of nonsense and open up a giant can of worms besides, especially in terms of support.

Nexter can sometimes be a subtle as an elephant in a porcelain shop lol

Winstep Modules/Widgets were never intended to be opened to scripting by users. While this ensures complete control over the quality (or lack) of these modules, it is also true that it prevents an ecosystem from forming such as the one that exists for RainMeter- users can’t extend or experiment with new ideas - slowing innovation, niche features, and community momentum.

This said, at least for now, I don't see that changing any time soon.

Well thank goodness for that! :D

Oh, and we *are* talking to a spam bot - spam in profile. Banned already.

As stated in another thread regarding animated objects around the modules, there's plenty happening already. I can see the usage of animating certain additional things, but agreed, 3rd party scripting allowance would be a recipe for disaster.

After thinking about this in discussion breifly with you and Nexter, the sensible thing would be to create an independent application that does graphic animations of the skinning images that can link in with Winstep, but completely independent of the functions of any part of Winstep. That way it doesn't become like the all-in-one-stereo-system where one thing messes up and the entire thing falls over. Hypothetically that is, if that was to ever occur. I know it is possible because Wanda has been animated on the desktop for a long time, but feasible across the board? That's debatable.

Hmm, that sounds like it would be complicated if at all possible. Would be simpler, I think, to allow for some mods to allow for animating users' gfx, perhaps?

BTW, @BassdudeNZ, you do realise that this thread was started by a spam bot (probably dumb "AI")? :)
