New guy here, love program, but, can anyone tell me why every time I shut down or restart my PC I have to re-install Winstep? Not only re-install, delete previously downloaded program, and then re-install.

Running: Windows 7 64 bit

Err, that's definitely not normal, but you don't explain why you have to delete it/re-install after rebooting your system.

What happens when you try to run Xtreme after a reboot?

Thanks for reply, oops, forgot explanation. And yes, it doesn't seem normal.

At first I though "ok, it closed the program, I'll just to my programs, find it, and open it back up." Which is what I did, but every time I clicked on any one of the folders, it would say I didn't have access to program. And it wasn't one of those "Run as Admin." situations, it pretty much said, Nope, can't do that. Even tried the .exe file...nope.

But, I found if I deleted everything, re downloaded, and re-installed,it would be back to normal. Of, course I had to move everything around again(3 times)So, I just keep it in sleep mode, and it stays activated.

Very frustrating, this is just the type of desktop enchantment I've been looking for.

So, any thoughts? I can provide you with additional info you might need.

Can you please post a screenshot of the message you get when you try to run Winstep Xtreme after a reboot?

Err, those links are asking me for a password.

Just attach the screenshot JPG files directly to your reply to this message: when you are composing your reply, there is a 'Upload Attachment' section below the main message body editor, click the 'Browse' button then the 'Add the File' button.

message says
"This item referred to by this shortcut cannot be accessed.
You may not have the appropriate permissions"

Use this to post your pics. http://tinypic.com/ It's what I use when the images are too large to post directly.

avoid tinypic like avoiding the plague. use imageshack or skydrive. tinypic has a nasty habit of removing images for no reason.

Well, as the second image says, you seem to have a user permissions problem on your PC. Hard to tell you exactly what it is since I'm not there to diagnose.

What happens if you go directly to C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\ and double click the WinstepXtreme application?

New here, too, and just trying to help. I've gotten help via these forums and so want to return the favors, if I can. I won't be at all offended if you simply ignore my suggestions, in which case I don't expect a reply. :)

Did you install the program to an unusual folder rather than the usual Program Files (x86) folder?

Do you use more than one user account on the PC? If so, could you have installed Winstep under a user ID other than the one in which you're trying to use it?

What happens if you bypass the shortcut or is that what you meant by having even tried the .exe? Navigate to the Winstep installation directory (on my PC it's Local Disk (C:) -> Program Files (x86) -> Winstep) and double-click the .exe file (on my PC it's WinstepXtreme.exe.

If you check the security properties of the .exe file (Right-click -> Properties -> Security Tab) do you see the SYSTEM, Administrators, and Users user names? If you click on the Users user name do the permissions show that both Read & Execute and Read are Allowed? It sounds as though the answer to that question, in your case, will be "no." Question is, how did that happen?

Hope this helps. FWIW, I'm using Win 7 64-bit Pro with no issues.

Cheers,

Hey wbmccarty, thanks for reply, after utilizing this forum, I realized the problem was actually in my user program preferences for "permissions". I adjusted it, and everything was fine. And, yes, I originally installed it without any additional changes.

Thanks again bud
