How can I further decrease the horizontal distance between the icons...with the settings this is the minimum, but is there a way to decrease it further?

Thanks for the screenshot, without it it would probably not have been possible to figure out what is REALLY going on, at least not in a timely manner.

Your problem is not the icon spacing, but the fact that you are using a TILED theme for the dock (which is not visible in the actual dock at the bottom of the screenshot likely because the dock background is set to be 100% transparent). The tiles themselves have non-stretchable edges that are added to the icon spacing, so that the icons do not overlap the tile edges (hope that makes sense) - this is what is preventing the icons from being tighter together.

In short, the solution to your problem: apply a theme to the dock that is NOT based on tiles.
