I started using Winstep, yesterday. I noticed soon after using it that when I click the Start button of Winstep and then click on All Programs, Adobe Reader starts to launch right away for some reason. I have canceled Adobe reader but today I decided to let it run. When I did this NextSTART crashed. Here is the error report that I get.

NextSTART needs to resolve shortcuts (.lnk files) in the All Programs menu.

Some shortcuts point not to the executables themselves, but to the Windows Installer.

For instance, a shortcut to Adobe Reader does not point to

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe

but to

C:\Windows\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A93000000001}\SC_Reader.ico.

In another example, the shortcut to Microsoft Word 2007 points to:

C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{91120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}\Wordicon.exe

instead of

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\WinWord.exe

These types of shortcuts need to be resolved first in order to get the proper filename. For some reason, the action of resolving the shortcut in your system also seems to cause the Windows Installer to launch Adobe Reader.

I'm looking into this, not sure if it is a problem with the method of resolving shortcuts or something specific to your system.

In the mean time, what Windows version are you running? What happens if you drag that shortcut from the NextSTART All Programs menu to, say, the dock? Does Adobe Reader also launch when you attempt to do this?

One thing you can do for now: right click on the NextSTART Start Button. Select 'Open All Users' from the context menu. Open the 'Programs' folder. Inside this folder you should find the shortcut to Adobe Reader - please move it to a temp directory so we can test any fixes later.

Now navigate to the Adobe Reader folder in C:\Program files\ (should be C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\) and create a shortcut to AcroRd32.exe in the 'Programs' folder by right-click and dragging the executable file. This should put a stop to Adobe Reader launching when you open the All Programs menu in NextSTART (although it does not fix the actual cause).

Before I was able to do any of your suggestions, I rebooted my pc and everything seems to work fine now. I did notice that there is an Adobe Reader 8 shortcut on my desktop now with Target "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe". I guess that is what it was trying to do when I hit the "All Programs" tab. When I click on "All Programs" now it does what its supposed to without crashing.

Thanks for your quick response.
