Hello,
I have been using the free version of Winstep Nexus for a few weeks now and really like it. I just got a new laptop, a dell latitude E6520, and was getting ready to buy the ultimate version but I have a problem now. On my new laptop Nexus will not contact the update server, it just gives the following

Check for Updates Failed:
Connection to Update Server Failed!

All my other programs seem to work just fine, it is only Nexus that is giving me a problem.
As a troubleshooting step I restored my laptop to a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate with no other software installed, so no antivirus or anything and I have also turned off the firewall completely. On my old system the update check works fine. Also I have noticed the weather dock item will not connect and get updates either.

Any ideas? Would it be possible to get the name of the update server with the port number it is trying to connect to so I can try and figure out what is going on? I would really like to fix this before I purchase.

Thanks
Bern

Well, it's a vanilla HTTP request to port 80 of www.winstep.net.

My guess is that your firewall is blocking Nexus (nexus.exe) as well as the Winstep Update Manager (wsupdate.exe).

Weird, that should be working. As for my firewall blocking it, I have the firewall completely turn off. I even added a rule to allow Nexus (nexus.exe) as well as the Winstep Update Manager (wsupdate.exe), still does not work.

Any other suggestions?

Did you change any of the Proxy settings in the Advanced tab of Preferences?

No I did not change any settings what so ever.
I enabled the 'Alternative connection detection' setting and now I don't get any notification at all.

Also if it helps, when I am in the weather docket settigs and I click the Get Weather button it comes back with

Sorry, connection to the Weather Service failed!
Reason: No Internet connection. Waiting for one to be establised.
Please try again later...

Now I know I have internet since I am on it right now...

If turn off the 'Alternative connection detection' setting and click the button I get

Sorry, connection to the Weather Service failed!
Reason: Conection to Weather Server failed!
Please try again later...

Just as a test I brought up my browser and tried going to http://xoap.weather.com/weather and that does work and replies "This is the XML Search Server test page..."

also here is the version info from Nexus
Nexus 10.03.0887
Nextcontrols.ocx 1.00.0151
region.dll 1.00.0001
wszip.dll 1.01.0000
wsUnzip.dll 1.01.0000

10.3?!! Where on earth did you get that from?!

Go download v11.2 from the Winstep web site. Not that I think that will help with your Internet connection problems, but one never knows.

are you using a 3rd party firewall? if so make sure the windows firewall is off then. the one that comes with windows doesn't always tell you it blocked something.

you may want to google and see if you can find info on hidden windows firewall settings. i know even in win 7 you can turn off the firewall and still have items blocked by it. one of the first things i do is going into serviced and disable it there. my main reason is that i'm not trusting security software from the same manufacture of my os. also maybe you said no to something from the uca popups that you should of said yes to.

ok I have figured out what is causing the problem just don't know how to fix it. The Latitude E6520 is a dual video card system, it has both the intel HD video and the Nvidia Video. As soon as install the Nvidia video drivers it breaks the update check for Nexus, if I uninstall the Nvidia video drivers then all works again..

Suggestions?

ok try pulling the driver completely, completely pulling nexus, then install the driver first then nexus. if that works i would contact nvidia not dell about the problem. might also want to try a older driver or beta driver and see if the same problem pops up.

Well, I hope you realized by now that the problem is thus not Nexus itself, but the nVidia drivers - something that will break net access for other applications too. This doesn't get you any closer to a solution, just makes it obvious that I will be as clueless as you are.

Try searching Google for this issue. I just did a quick search and one of the first articles I found was THIS. Not going to help you much since not only doesn't it show how to fix the problem, as the guy is running Linux, but it might point you in the right direction (and at least you now know you are not alone).

Ah, one more question: if you add a Net Meter module to the dock, what entries do you see when you right click on it and then select 'Interface to Monitor' in the context menu that pops up? If there are too many, just take a screenshot and post it here (SHIFT+PRTSCN).
