Hi again :)

running Extreme for a while now and its just fine for my needs :). See the attached below for my ultra clean desktop finally!

Put two docks on the bottom of each screen to display running programs and having the system tray button of NextStart to the left one, some rainmeter skins and done. Got a MainMenu via Hotspot defined for all my shortcuts.

However got couple of issues which I ecountered.

1. I cannot put the Virtual XP Mode to the Menu. I have tried moving the shortcut there, creating it manually etc. It results always with the error seen in the screenshot. I can run the XP Mode without any issue if I create a normal shortcut on my desktop for example.

2. Is there a way of reducing the frequence of the update checks? I have set it to ask me before checking, but it does it like every 5 min. I know I can turn it off, however I would like know when the update is being checked. Secondary, is it correct if there is no new version the check just remains silent? A message would be nice, especially when I use the manual check, now I click the button and literally nothing happens (or just invisible).

3. I have set the system tray to display all running applications and hide when not used, just show time and date. When I click the button to show the applications, they don't show fully expanded to the left, but some are behind the button. I have to move the button first, for them all to show to the left. This happens only after the very first start and works as intended then for the rest of the windows session. On next restart they are behind the button again.

That's all for now :)

Regards,

Mike

edit: I have attached the screenshot with the "upload attachment" function in the post, but it doesn't show. What am I doing wrong? Tried it twice, its not showing?

edit2: Here it goes:

Hi Mike, and my apologies for the late reply...

I've been running Xtreme with the Update Manager set to prompt me for the past week and, as expected, I only get a prompt once per week or whenever I re-start Xtreme.

My guess, if you are getting a prompt every 5 minutes, is that the Update Manager has been blocked from going through your firewall. If communication fails, the Update Manager will try again soon after (I would agree, however, that you should only get a prompt the first time - I still have to look at the code that handles that).

You can always disable the automated update check in the Advanced tab of Preferences and only perform manual checks for updates. Of course, checking manually will only be useful if the Update Manager is actually able to communicate with the Winstep servers.

As for the Virtual XP Mode menu (what is that?) my guess would be an issue with file system re-direction for 32 bit applications under 64 bit version of Windows. Are you running Windows 7 64 bit?

As for the system tray, you really do mean the system tray and not the taskbar/tasklist, right (because you mentioned 'running applications')? Is your NextSTART system tray set to 'float' on your desktop?

Hey :). No worries, thanks for taking the time at last :P, no easy things as always with me, hehe. And sorry for my bad english, guess that might be cause for some misunderstandings sort of.

It is correct then when clicking "Check for Updates" in this window Image, nothing happens? I expected some notification window to open like "contacting servers" or similar, but I click it and nothing happens. My firewall doesn't block it from what I can see at this point. I have checked with the Net Meter whether a new connection is established and with the taskmanager if a new process is started. Both doesn't happen. From what I see that the button click doesn't do anything at this point.

I am running W764 prof. This is what I am talking about: http://windows.microsoft.com/de-DE/windows7/products/features/windows-xp-mode think you need to change the country though for you. Basically my problem is, that the shortcut to start the virtual PC cannot be put to the NextStart Menu. Would be nice if you could take the time and have a look at time, but it is not 100% crucial.

I mean this thingy: Image and here is the settings: Image It would look like this: Image
top shows the correct one and the bottom shows the one after start when I click it for the first time to see the items. I have to pick the button up with the mouse and move it a little and when reclicking it, it shows all items correct like the top button.

Hope this gives some more information about what I am talking about.

Regards,

Mike

Issues still there, with an update on the update check, :)

It gives now an error message, connection to update server failed.

However there is nothing blocked on my machine or router for winstep not being able to connect. Is there any special port I have to open for the update?

Is it possible to check the connection to the server via a ping or traceroute from my machine to see if there is a connection at all?

Have you had any chance to look into the things I elaborated?

Updates checks are performed by wsupdate.exe via a normal HTTP port 80 connection. If the check fails, the most likely answer is that wsupdate.exe is being blocked by your firewall.

This said, there are indeed a couple of reports where users are not able to check for updates. This is not a fault/bug with the Update Manager itself (it works fine for thousands of other users), but something system specific, and, as such, nearly impossible for me to debug and solve.

The Update Manager is just a convenience, anyway: you can always update manually to the latest version by downloading it from the Winstep web site and installing it on top (i.e.; NOT uninstalling anything first). Your current settings will be preserved.

As for the system tray, try clearing the 'Detach system tray from the taskbar' setting. Looking at the screenshots, it looks like you have the system tray positioned over the NextSTART taskbar anyway.
