Hi,
I'm using Xtreme 11.10 under Windows 7.
The only module I'm using is Nextstart.
When I mouseover the floating taskbar, I get a tooltip. When my windowtitle is not in English (the system language), but in Russian, the NS tooltip only shows a bunch of question marks.
How do I fix this?
Thank you.

Unfortunately NextSTART uses ANSI, not Unicode. As such, it can only display non-western characters in a specific language if the correct code page/language has been selected in Windows (Control Panel -> Region and Language -> Administrative tab -> Language for non-Unicode programs).

For instance, if your Windows is in Russian and the system locale is also set to Russian, you should have no problem displaying Russian characters. But if the system locale is set to English, Russian characters will then appear as gibberish in NextSTART.

Is your Windows in Russian or English? What language did you select for NextSTART, Russian or English? What language is selected as the system locale?

Hi Jorge,
The system locale is English.
Windows is English.

Right. In that case, Russian characters will unfortunately appear as gibberish.

Try setting your system locale to Russian and then re-starting Winstep Xtreme, that *should* help with the weird characters (hopefully without secondary effects in other ANSI based applications).

Seriously?! In order to see tooltips in non-Latin font, I have to change my entire Windows interface language to that? I speak three languages, with two of them using character set different from Latin. How am I expected to use your program? Please tell me that by now this problem has a better solution...

Actually, the system locale is *not* the user interface language. So no, you don't have to change that.
The system locale is, as per Windows help:

"The system locale determines the default character set (letters, symbols, and numbers) and font used to enter and display information in programs that don't use Unicode. This allows non-Unicode programs to run on your computer using the specified language. You might need to change the default system locale when you install additional display languages on your computer. Selecting a different language for the system locale doesn't affect the language in menus and dialog boxes for Windows or other programs that do use Unicode."

It's located in the "Region and Language" dialogue (from the Control Panel), "Administrative" tab, "Language for non-Unicode programmes" region.
Personally, I've seen no difference with any locale selected, other than Winstep changing languages. The vast majority of current programmes does use Unicode, so there's no reason to revert to the system locale.

Having said that, in the past I had suggested putting an "override" option somewhere in the Winstep settings, since I was suffering from the exact opposite problem: I wanted Winstep in English, but the system locale to "Greece" since there were some old programmes I used (rarely) that came from way back when and used an old character encoding. I remember being very pissed off, back then, that I had to change my locale to "English", but I did change it and... haven't had any problem since. Actually, programmes that are *that* old, can't even run on Windows 7...

I will try that. I also don't want program dialog boxes, etc. in Russian. I just want the folders and files named in Russian to appear that way. They do under Win 7, but not after NexusStart is activated.
