New User, please excuse. I did read the old documentation, and I have done searches... but the search results come back with things circa 2006 which ain't this version.

I am trying to rearrange the order of the items in a SendTo tab. It simply won't let me.

Also, I have a wide screen, and it "bunches" all the items to the left of the tab... with a lot of empty placeholders. It would be great to be able to move the items, frankly, anywhere in the tabs for grouping of them.

Finally, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get a subdock in the shelf. Do subdocks only work in docks? And again, if I could move the subdock item to different placeholder positions, that would be perfect.

Apparently all issues have a common root cause:

From the Winstep Xtreme FAQ:

Q) Can I re-arrange tab items?

A) Yes, but only for Regular and Active Tasks tab types. The Shelf is able to display several different tab types, but you can split those into two main groups: 'Regular' Shelf tabs, in which the tab acts like a dock and where you can re-arrange items at will, and tabs which show the contents of folders/virtual folders on your PC. The latter group, being a 'window' into a folder in your hard disk or a virtual shell folder, cannot have the content re-arranged, and its contents are always displayed in alphabetical order.

i don't know how hard it would be to implement but in the future is there any way to have a tab use the view settings for the folder it is referencing? say like in my case i have a tab that points to my downloads. when i open the my downloads via explorer i have the items sorted by type, the movies folder is by name.

Having specific tabs sort by type/file extension instead of alphabetically would not be hard to implement at all.

However, that is not what he is asking. He wants to freely re-arrange items on folder type tabs, just like you are able to do with regular tab types.

It's not that this can't be done, but it would be a lot of work and have serious implications: just imagine that one creates a tab on the Shelf that displays the contents of a folder containing *thousands* of files.

Being able to freely arrange files in such a folder would mean having to keep track of *thousands* of files and their positions relative to each other. Given a large enough folder, this would probably mean a huge slow down in displaying such a tab, as well as high memory usage... not to mention lots of potential synchronization problems!

... and it's done. In the next release you will be able to sort folder type tabs by Name, Type, Size and Time.

The thing is guys that you completely missed the main part of the question:

"Also, I have a wide screen, and it "bunches" all the items to the left of the tab... with a lot of empty placeholders. It would be great to be able to move the items, frankly, anywhere in the tabs for grouping of them."

Exactly what I'm trying to find the answer to...
The shelf uses up the full width of the screen - I have tabs over on the right hand side of the screen because they spread evenly over the width - ALL of the items on the tab bunch up on the left which means that I have to go over to the right side of the screen for the tab and then all the way back over to the left for the item.
What Disordered would like, and myself, is the ability to drop items anywhere on the shelf (imagine any one of the boxes that show up across the whole width if 3D border is on), right, left, middle, anywhere.

Yes, you can 'rearrange' items at the moment, but only within the area on the left of the shelf/dock that the icons use up. Not ideal behaviour ergonomically.
This is unfortunately common behaviour on every dock program I have tried. It'd be nice if someone broke the mould.

You know, the Shelf doesn't need to be full screen width. You can disable the 'Span the full screen width' setting in the Position tab of the Shelf Properties dialog, and you can then position the Shelf horizontally anywhere you like along the screen edge, and even set it's width to whatever you want.

This is one solution.

The other is to insert blank separators between items so the remaining items are grouped/positioned exactly where you want them to be. Of course, this latter approach only works in Regular Shelf tabs.

spud while winstep is aesthetically pleasing compared to windows explore and it might make it for some to have everything uniformed even more aesthetically pleasing, i find it far more ergonomic to have the items on the shelf positioned to the left like they currently are. plus it is far more about function over form for me.

Well, since all this is about user choice... I do agree with Jorge on the spacers thing... but I've mentioned this in the past: why not have a choice of left, centre and right alignment? Per tab? That shouldn't be too difficult to implement, no?

Oh, and don't forget my 'scrolling' idea too! :D

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, (Shakespeare: Julius Cesar) …

was mentioned more than once in this topic. However, it does not tell how to do it. It seems to me that this instruction should have a B)

I have a Regular tab labelled Docu pgms with now 20 icons on it. I want to place the new 20st between the second and third one. I have not found a method to do it.

WorkShelf file version 12.02.1037, Nextcontrols 1.00.0151

Do I need to open a new topic to get Your attention?

There is no B) because all you need to do is click on the icon and drag it to where you want to put it. If the destination place is not visible (i.e.; above or below), move the icon over the scroll arrows at the Shelf's far right and the tab rows will scroll automatically. When the row you want shows up just drop the icon where you want to put it.

Jorge,
«click on the icon and drag it to where you want to put it» is exactly what i do - but nothing hapens.
I thought that this is a glitch using a Wacom pen, but with the mouse the same (nothing) happens.
I do this:

- left click and hold on the rightmost icon
- move to the location between icon 1 and 2 (see arrow)
- release mouse button
=> nothing happens
