jorge i never gave space on the shelf much thought until i just saw it on a really light theme. i think there is more at the ends and bottom of the shelf than there needs to be. with the size i have my icons that's space for two more icons across. as for the spacing on the bottom of the shelf look at the image i posted and you will see what i mean by too much space there. i think there should be some off set from the bottom of the shelf, but not that much.

Krazd, that *could* be due to the creator of the theme.
If you want, you can go to the .WSW file and check out the numbers under the following names:
BodyTopTile
BodyBottomTile
BodyLeftTile
BodyRightTile
BodyTopOffset
BodyBottomOffset
BodyLeftOffset
BodyRightOffset

The "tile" is the width of the background bitmap that doesn't get stretched, while, and this is something that I've been telling Jorge for ages it doesn't make sense, the "offset" on its own doesn't do anything; however, the offset PLUS the tile constitute the "margin", the "gap" if you will, between the edge of the shelf and the contents. So, the "offset", you could say, is the *extra* offset you may need, assuming that the "tile" is your basis.
However, this is problematic if your theme needs a bigger "tile" than it needs 'clearance' from the edges, and in my opinion, the tile and offset should be completely independent. But that's a different subject altogether.

skagon i checked the spacing on three themes before posting and it's the same more or less. i just tested it again and i see why the extra space. i didn't look at themes with thick borders like v_o_x, and hud.

I fixed this on that theme.

In case anyone is interested, the offset can be a negative number to reduce the space there. For this theme, I have BodyBottomOffset= -25. That pulled the icons closer to the edge.

Here is the theme if you're interested: http://www.wincustomize.com/explore/winstep/616/

@Jorge: aren't you supposedly also "one of those weird europeans"?

@all: ...If I want, I can have the social graces of a butterfly. Well, ok, maybe more like this:

...rather than the fluttery kind... but still. :D

Hey, what did you expect, you've got a nick like "Xiandi", and a subject like "extra space"... a Trekker can hold back for *so* long...

o.k. now that we've had our fun this does bring up something. the spacing on the sides and the bottom of the shelf should be something the enduser can change on a per theme basis from the shelf preferences menu. the extra space is on every row of icons in a tab. so like one tab i have 3 rows of 30 and a row of 12. now if i add 19 more items to that shelf i will end up with a 5th row. now being able to adjust the spacing on both ends and the bottom would allow me to have the extra items but still maintain 4 rows.

jorge also where the shelf is concerned you might want to take a look at the multirow bookmarks toolbar plus for firefox. see if maybe if it is possible to implement that kind of scrolling in the shelf. if not it's still a great addon for ff.
