Sometimes I get users complaining that Nexus is slow. When probed further, it usually turns out that this is relative to the edge bump delay. As you probably know, the edge bump delay is user configurable and is there to help prevent accidental edge bumps from activating the dock. Being user configurable, it can also be set so that the dock activates instantly.

What is your edge delay currently set for?

You can find out what it is in Nexus Ultimate/Winstep Xtreme by opening the Dock or Shelf Properties dialog (in Nexus Preferences if running Nexus free), going to the Behavior tab, then clicking on the Edge Bump Settings button.

I originally posted this thread in the Beta section but then decided to move it here.

I've got it at 300msec (incidentally, there it says "ege bump"... typo)!
What does that say?
Incidentally, I would like to have the *shelf* at 300msec, but a dock parked to the left, to something like 500-700msec. :?

Mine was initially at 500 but I just made it 300.

@Skagon My spelling seems to be OK

Spotted it, it's in 'Distance from screen edge that still triggers an ege bump'.

Fixed it, thanks.

Skagon, unfortunately the edge bump delay is global. The routine that monitors for edge bumps does not know if the edge bump will activate a dock, a Shelf, or nothing. It just flags an edge bump whenever it happens.

The big question is: should the edge bump delay be set to the minimum by default?

Umm... personally, I don't know...

Maybe it's worth considering that suggestion I had made, for a first-run Wizard with the basic configuration options?

First run Wizards don't work, Skagon. It will piss a lot of users off (the wizard will be in the way between them running Nexus for the first time and starting to have fun with it), and 99.9% of them will just breeze past the wizard without even reading the options in it.

Besides, a user cannot possibly evaluate if 100ms or 500 ms is better for him without having first tried both options.

The only thing that *might* work is an instant 'prompt' of some kind the very first time you try a feature (and only then). For instance, you bump the screen edge and a dialog or balloon tooltip appears pointing out that users can change the speed at which the dock responds to edge bumps, and where they can do it from.

Another example would be a similar prompt when the clock speaks the time for the first time, pointing out to the users how and where they can turn this feature off if they don't want it.

It would be some kind of interactive first run tutorial.

I think such a thing would work a lot better, and I have been thinking about it for some time. The trick is identifying all the 'problematic' points, so each one could have a specific prompt associated to it. However, overdo this and, again, you end up just pissing users off.

this would get my vote. i wish more apps did this. about making the edge bump 100 ms by default i would. i just tried my roommates which is set at 500 ms and it felt like i was waiting forever.

Well, maybe you could re-examine the "speed vs duration" issue I had talked about in the past, while you're at it?
If you don't remember, I'd prefer a setting of "pixels per second" rather than a "how many milliseconds", which makes horizontally (by length) sliding (sub)docks speed demons and vertically (by height) sliding docks slugs.

Mine is set to 100 ms. I prefer a quick response.

I have mine set at 300ms. It gives me a short amount of time to back away from the screen edge if I acidentally bump it in full screen mode.

Mine is set to 100ms. 500ms feels very slow for my taste. First-time info balloons or such sound good. I'm quite new user and there have been some very useful settings I wasn't first aware and didn't notice. Like how to change the font size in NextStart and how to arrange the order of modules captured in taskbar.
