When I try to create a Show Folder Tab in the Workshelf, the system pops up a themed file dialog but the dialog is stuck and cannot be manipulated. If I press Esc and click Browse a non-themed dialog box pops up, which DOES let me select a folder. But, no matter what I specify I get either C:\ or the Start Up folder. The same problem occurs if I try to type the folder name. After I hit Enter, whatever I type is ignored and one or the other of the two folders I mentioned replaces it.

Understandably, this is a show-stopper for me.

What can I do to resolve or help troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

P.S. At installation time, perhaps under another theme, a Show Folder Tab was successfully created. Something has apparently gone wrong since that time.

Cheers,

P.P.S. Right clicking a folder and selecting Send To Workshelf works perfectly. It seems the problem has to do with the New/Insert Tab dialog rather than the Show Folder Tab functionality.

Cheers,

wbmccarty, you can also click the small button on the left side of workshelf to open workshelf preferences. then click docks & shelves \ shelf and you will be presented with the content tab, there you can also create you folder tabs with out them defaulting to the root drive contents or the contents of the folder to the right of the new folder. as for the folder name changing i don't believe anyone else has had that issue. i agree with you that it is a show stopper.

Yes, thanks. Fortunately, as far as function is concerned, there are many workarounds. I do tend to push software pretty hard and so often experience problems that others somehow don't. OTOH, I'm also very finicky about problems and so work hard to keep my systems clean by stubbornly resolving every problem that arises.

But unfortunately, to add to my concern and disappointment, I am seeing more and more access violations. I found myself all but unable to simply change the icon associated with a Workshelf tab owing to having an Access Violation each time I right-clicked on it. I fear that having blithely responded a number of times with Retry rather than Cancel has caused the Workshelf configuration to become corrupted and that the corruption may be progressive.

Is there any way to check the Workshelf configuration for consistency?

I dread the thought of beginning afresh but suppose that may be the proper course. Is it even possible to do so?

You might be right about starting over. Another thing to ponder is if your security software could be the problem. Sometimes certain ones silently block only a part/function of a program because it thinks it's malicious and you have to go in and manually allow it.

One of the main culprits of this behavior is Windows Defender. Some people just shut the thing off.

i must afree with windy, also you might have another app stealing the focus just as you are trying to preform a function with winstep.

Unfortunately a simple change to the 'Add new tab' dialog created a show stopper bug in which a tab set to show the contents of a folder always resets to C:\.

The solution until the next release, as Chucky pointed out, is to use the Contents tab of the Shelf Properties dialog.

This can be caused by a 3rd party context menu extension (when you right click a file system item, the context menu will display the same options you find when you right click that same item in Windows Explorer). Some of these 3rd party extensions can be quiet buggy.

To confirm the source of the problem, open WorkShelf Preferences, go to the General tab then click on the More Options button. In the dialog that pops up, change 'Show full right click context menu options?' from 'Always' to 'Never' then press Ok twice to apply the changes.

Now try right clicking the shortcut in the Shelf that is causing the Access Violation. Did this solve the problem?

If it does, you will now know *why* it happens. What this doesn't do is tell you *which* of the extensions is buggy, unfortunately - only you can find that out by trial and error.

Understood, Jorge. Thanks for the clear and helpful response. It does appear that the problem is due to a third-party program. My suspicion is that it's Evernote, since I recall that I began getting Access Violations after creating a launch icon for Evernote. I'll get out my trial-and-error hat and confirm my suspicion.

FWIW, I just purchased the Xtreme version. I'm very happy with what I see.

Cheers,
