Hi all, I uninstalled my trial version of winstep and it took with it all of my icons and folders that were in the dock. I can't locate many of them. Help please?

Thank you,
Brenda

The shortcuts in the dock aren't shortcut files, like Windows has on the desktop. So, you can't find them anywhere on the disk. In all probability, they must be somewhere either in the registry, or in some configuration file in the Users directory.
I'm not sure where, that is something I never bothered looking into.
However, the folders that had a shortcut on the dock or shelf, should be where they were before.

I think she means the original/source shortcuts which she dragged to the dock disappeared.

This could happen in one of two cases:

1. She dragged those shortcuts to the dock and *then* manually deleted them from the original location. In that case, the shortcuts are gone or in her recycle bin.

2. She was running Wintep Xtreme and she moved the shortcuts to a folder-type tab of the Shelf or even the Desktop tab. In that case, and because a folder-type tab on the Shelf is nothing but a window into a real physical folder on the hard drive, the shortcuts will be on the folder she dragged them to.

Thanks. I did drag them to the dock, but did not manually delete them. When I put them in the dock they disappeared from the desktop. There were many work files, pics and other valuable items there. I haven't been able to locate them anywhere. It was not extreme, but the trial version from a year ago. If anyone would be able to help be I would be beyond grateful!

Thanks,
Brenda

Umm... as far as I know, that's not supposed to happen. In fact, I just tried it on some shortcut and directory copies I made on the desktop, and when I dragged their icons on a dock, the original objects don't move from the desktop. In fact, nothing happens to them; they are unaffected even after I deleted the test subjects from the dock.
Are you sure you haven't done anything wrong?
Have you tried reinstalling Winstep? I'm not certain, but I'm guessing it could read the old config and restore everything to how it was.
Cheers!

There is another possibility, but it's a bit far fetched:

If you have a shortcut to a *folder* on the dock and then file items *into* that, the items will be moved to the folder itself (on the other hand, they would not appear on the dock either).

Are you sure we are talking about the dock here and not the Shelf (tabbed dock)?

This is not easy if your not very Techy but ....
why not goto start menu /programs/accessories/system tools/restore points
go back to a date you had those icons .... make a new folder on your desktop
drag them in then save the new folder to a different drive letter so they will be safe...... then go back to system restore points and it allows you to do a UNDO back as if nothing had changed.... if your unsure either ask someone who is or dont attempt it ... by the way once a system restore point has been started you must not touch the pc untill its fully restarted on its own
good luck

7.4? are you sure it's 7.4? is winstep the only program you are having a prob with uninstalling? if it's not maybe you need to think about rerunning the os.. then downloading the current version of winstep xtreme which is 12.2.

Blinx, blackgranate got a virus, so it may not be a good idea to try to recover those folders. one bad thing about system restore if you do decide to use it is typically rolling back will not get rid of the virus if you haven't gotten rid of it before doing the rollback, plus since you had the virus when you had those folders doing a rollback is likely to bring back the virus. however he can give it a try. blackgranate please restart your comp and go into safe mode to run system restore. if you try to run it in the normal windows environment you have a 50% chance if it failing.

here for those who wish to step back in time.

i think i got what you meant when i responded. please list all the programs you cannot use any more. if your license for winstep is active download a copy of the latest version 12.2. from the sound of it i still think reinstalling xp and your programs is going to be your best bet.

I think the big question is why are you running a version of Winstep Xtreme that is over 5 years old?

If you're a legit registered user, can you please send me a PM with the details of your purchase? I can't find the email address you've used in this forum in the Winstep's registrations database.
