Hi Folks,

Here's an "interesting" problem. Whilst installing some homebrew database software the other day the vb install program (standard vb install) declared that some file needed to be "updated". I know, I know, I should have clicked "cancel". I didn't.

Now winstep extreme won't run (application didn't start correctly error code: 0xc0000022).

So I clean up the machine, uninstall and reinstall winstep.

Note: I have multiple user accounts on the computer (win 7x64) and only one with admin rights.

Winstep runs fine in my admin account - loads my backedup settings, etc.

But it doesn't run in my user account.

Any ideas?

John :? :? :?

Update: I gave my normal user account admin rights and did another uninstall/reinstall. No luck. HOWEVER, it appears that when I run winstep with elevated privledges it will run. :?

Running Xtreme elevated is not a solution - when you do that you lose the ability to drag stuff from Explorer windows into docks, etc, because of something called UIPI (User Interface Privilege Isolation).

These type of problems are really messy because your Windows Registry is now in an undetermined state. Have you already tried a restore point?

Restore point wasn't an option - naturally I just cleaned them all out.

I was relying on the fact that an install usually triggers a new restore point. *This* (unlike the others) install broke during the install process. So the problem was with the VB install rather than the homebrew itself.

I found something in the forum about permissions that I haven't had the chance to try out.

...sigh...

I may just have to restore a backup and go from there

John
