I'm afraid I'll have to defer that to someone else, since I don't use the mail checker.
However, bear in mind that the checker is exactly what it says: it will only *check* your account(s) for new mails; it's not an application to *receive* them.

Anyone else that can actually help this fine gentleman, guys?

Right click on the Email Checker and select Settings. And, yes, you can receive your emails through the Email Checker. When you receive mail double click the checker to retrieve them.

What, really? How does it display them then?
Unless you mean, you click on the icon and it opens "Thunderbird", "Outlook" or whatever application you're using.

Yes, sorry that wasn't quite clear. Double-clicking will open up Thunderbird, etc.

Frankly, I don't know if Microsoft is still giving away Outlook for free, like they used to. However, if you want to check Hotmail or Live or Outlook (all different names for the same Microsoft mail service), they do have a POP service. The server is pop3.live.com with a 995 port and SSL security.
As far as the e-mail client, since we're talking about Hotmail, if you're using some application to receive your e-mails, like Outlook or Live Mail, you have to locate the .exe for that application and input that in the "client" field of the settings. If you're using Explorer, Firefox or some other browser to read your e-mails, well, in that case you need something more. Like an HTTP link to the specific website, which you'll have to use as a link to the client application.
If you need specifics, let us know.

skagon weeeell the op will care since outlook which comes with office is not a email service, it is a client only. as for live and hotmail i assume these services are one and the same. now personally i see no real reason for the mail checker, why am i going to run it and get my mail count, when i can just open my mail client and get the same thing. one step instead of two.

...and that is exactly why I don't use it either... I've got thunderbird running all the time, so I get notifications from there. Besides, I very rarely get to see the desktop itself, so...
