Just read that you get free updates for 1 year. does that mean after 1 year do have to re-purchase the software or can i carry on with an un-updated version for free

You can carry on with an un-updated version for free.
(I am already doing this for one and a half year.)

Just to confirm Henk... the licence you buy means you are entitled to any and all updates that come within that year.
After that, you can continue to use any of those updates or releases that came out during that year (presumably the last one) for as long as you want.
