Winstep Xtreme users can download the new beta from:

http://www.winstep.net/xtreme-beta.zip

Nexus Ultimate users can download the new beta from:

http://www.winstep.net/ultimate-beta.zip

IMPORTANT: This beta package is an update and MUST be installed on top of a previous Winstep Xtreme/Nexus Ultimate v15.9 or later installation!

This is a beta. Please do not share this link outside this forum.

Before running the Setup file, remember to exit all Winstep applications first.

###

You have less than two days to come up with any bugs, so get cracking! :)

New in this beta:

* Added new 'Lookup IP Address' internal command. Returns the public IP address as well as current location and latitude/longitude coordinates.

* Added new 'Enable double caching of icons (speed boost)' option to the Performance Settings dialog in the Advanced tab of Preferences. Disabled by default, enable it to boost the rendering speed of magnifying docks by a factor of 2 or more, at the cost of a little bit more memory usage.

* Added 'Manage Alarms' button to the General tab of Preferences.

* Speeded up the initial construction of the semi-transparent blur regions by up to 4 times and cut their memory usage also by 4, without no noticeable visual drawbacks (Vista/7 only).

* Colorization of Desktop Modules is now also applied to the non-advanced skinning version of the module (i.e.; if the current global theme does not have a skin for that particular module).

* Dock icon labels are now also affected by the system's high-DPI settings.

* The 'Most Active Programs History' dialog (accessible by right clicking the CPU Meter module) now also shows the second most active process and its CPU usage for each second of the last 5 minutes. The list can also be made to refresh automatically.

* The 'Bring mouse forward when mouse pointer bumps screen edge' setting makes the dock come on top of other windows when you bump the associated screen edge, regardless of it being docked or free floating. To help with annoying accidental activations, moving the mouse away from the dock after it comes forward now brings the window that previously had the focus to the foreground.

* Icons now 'glow' when dragging an .ICO, .PNG or .TIF image over a dock or Shelf shortcut to give a visual cue to the user that dropping that image there will replace the target's shortcut icon.

Fixes:

* Weather module icon now flashes to give some feedback to the user even when the weather information is retrieved from the cache.

* The Effect Settings buttons in the Dock Properties panel were configuring the wrong effect in Beta 2.

* The charge and run time fonts of the battery module were not being scaled properly for high-DPI systems.

* The Outline and Shadow text styles were not being scaled up properly on high-DPI systems.

* Icons displayed in the 'Customize Task Icons', 'Task Exclusion List' and 'Thumbnail Exclusion List' dialogs are now scaled according to the system's current high DPI settings.

* The background color of the tray icons lists shown in the 'Tray Exclusion List' dialog is now darker under Windows 10 so the white native Windows icons can be seen.

* Fixed a handful of high-DPI related glitches.

* Fixed bug in beta 2 that could cause the new CD Control internal command to block or report an error.

* The 'Most Active Programs' list was logging an empty entry if all processes were using less than 1% CPU.

* Fixed issue in which an item belonging to the same dock would not be deleted when dropped into the recycler module if the insertion point was before the module.

* The clock module tooltip was using the current system settings to display the time in 24 or 12 hour format. It now uses the setting specified for the clock module.

* The wrong icon could be displayed for a customized task items when selecting it from a DLL.

* The attention effect would not play if an icon was currently displaying a persistent mouseover effect.

I had two animated icons: Nexus and Chrome. Now they are just "?". I really don't need them animated anymore but would like the static icons back. How do I do that? Thanks.

Eh?! That's a biggie.

Animated icons continue to work fine here, so it must be some combination of settings.

First please make sure the animated icon files really still exist. Now, if you right click one of those animated icons in the dock/Shelf and select 'Item Properties', can you see the static icon in the Properties dialog?

Also, is that on the dock or on the Shelf? Does it happen in both if you drag the item with the animated icon from one to the other?

What are your current effect settings? Did you enable the new 'double caching of icons' setting in the Performance panel?

Gregory, come on, you know I'm stressing out on a deadline here.

You can't just drop a bomb like that and then disappear. :P

1. No. It's "?".

2. I dragged from the dock to the shelf. The icon showed up in the shelf but it was static.

3. I didn't change anything in the effects and did not enable double caching.

Help me out, do some more experiments to see if you can come up with a pattern or something.

Animated icons are working fine here, in WorkShelf running under 7 and Nexus running in a Windows 10 VM.

When you right click the animated to open the Properties dialog, it shows the '?' icon too, right? But the static instance of the animated icon shows fine in the Shelf (regular Shelf tab?) even though it does not animate?

Ok, what do you see when you open the Item Properties dialog for both the icon in the dock and the icon in the Shelf? Do both display '?'. Also, is the 'Animation' button enabled or disabled?

What effect(s) do you have enabled on the dock? What is the dock's icon size?

What happens if you drag & drop the animation PNG strip into the dock (as a new item)?

Try a different animated icon. Does anything change?

What do you mean you lost your Nexus icon?

Anyone else having trouble with animated icons?

I don't use animated icons but I tried some and they work. Only time I've had issues with icons at all, is if the location of the icon (be it stand alone or inside a dll file) changes. So the reference to the icon should be checked.

Also, animated icons as I've discovered don't work in modules. Like Email Checker.

But getting a ? icon usually is indicative of the ico/png file not being present.

Try Removing the dock entry by right clicking on it and re-adding it from the main location. Or if there was an update to the program it referenced, perhaps that changed things too.

What I do, is I specifically create a folder in my documents called App Shortcuts and I put all the shortcuts to apps there with their icons preconfigured. I then use those to drag to the dock. Also they're there for later if I decide to remove them or shift my docks around because I'm always playing with various configurations. If you don't have an ico file to assign to the shortcut but only the png file (which Windows only allows ico files to be used for shortcuts) you can convert png files (transparency included) at convertico.com

Then always make sure to back up your settings in Nexus after you get everything set to the way you want it. Even if you make the slightest of changes. And save the file somewhere that won't be wiped out even if you reinstall Nexus and or your O/S. (I use Google Drive to back everything on my computer up so nothing is every lost as well I use Windows File History to maintain the previous version should there ever be an issue).

So that's just my input for the matter. lol Just trying to help even though I see you probably fixed the problem. Happy docking!

im not sure if this is the right place for first 'bug' since version 15.9 when auto-hiding shelf has a delay before becoming transparent. with 16.2 option to speed up animation delay is shorter but still noticable. (tried on multiple reinstalls with different skins and settings)

second, when loading backup from previous version to 16.2 ram and net metter modules size is reduced. clock module isnt reduced right away but after changing its setings it is also reduced. havent tried messing with other modules i have active (net meter and email checker)

also an older bug: when reistaling and loading old settings shelf in-shelf dock skins arent loaded properly (unlighted_ns theme for the shelf and custom skin for in-shelf docks), the problem doesnt appear (or not as often) when you load different backups after you set up the skins

URGENT: Anybody here running Windows 10 and the last v16.2 beta?

Enable the systray on your dock - does clicking the Volume tray icon work properly without any issues?

In my Windows 10 Virtual Machine, currently with screen DPI set to 150% (because that is what I was testing with Winstep Xtreme), clicking a system tray icon temporarily hangs the application. It's like Windows and Winstep are fighting for control of where the volume mixer will appear.

At first I thought it might be Microsoft and their damn constant UI updates again, but I just installed the same Xtreme version on a physical Windows 10 machine I have here (DPI set to 100% and currently up-to-date) and I don't see a issue here either.

Perhaps it is a high DPI only issue? Or maybe a 'speed' issue (the VM is stored in a hard disk and is obviously much slower running than the real thing in a real computer).

However, I have never seen this problem on the VM before - but I can't remember if I tried clicking a tray icon with the system set to use high DPI.

Ok, whatever it is, it is not DPI related: just changed DPI settings on my Windows 10 machine to 150% too and I have no troubles there with the tray icons.

This is only an issue on the Windows 10 VM. Explorer.exe there goes up to 99% CPU usage and after a while the mixer does pop up, but not close to the Winstep tray icon as it should. The weird part is that WorkShelf usage remains at 0%.
