Hey Jorge..

I was excited to see the update pop up today showing the new version is available.

However, I click on download now, the updater completes the download, looks like the installer starts when it asks me for a language, after that I get a single message that says:

"This upgrade can only be installed on top of an existing version of Winstep Extreme" Which I have installed.

After that the installer quits and.. Nothing else?

What am I missing?

Currently using 15.9 on Win7/64 Pro

The message you got was not from the Winstep Update Manager - it was from Innosetup, the installer of the new version itself (i.e; the updater had already done it's job).

When installing updates the setup program for that update looks for a special key in the Windows Registry that tells it if Winstep has already been installed on that computer or not, and refuses to install if the key is not there.

This is to prevent users from installing an update file thinking they are installing the full thing.

For some reason, either that special key got deleted on your system or it got a new name. Don't know which. Re-installing the full version should have done the trick, though - guess we will know for sure in the next update.

Yes, installing from the download seemed to work.

Like the battery monitor and the alarm is GREAT! I have often wanted something like this.

The IP command doesn't work for me though, likely related to my VPN.

And I just now found a bit of a problem with tooltips on the workshelf. If I have tooltips enabled (set to Always) and am using a complex mouseover animation, the animation, really the function of the whole dock, hangs for about 3 seconds then continues. There is a bit of a CPU spike on one core for that period. I turn off tooltips and it is fine. OR it also is fine if I use a simple effect with the tooltips.

Ya know, This software is probably the biggest reason i have not jumped over to Linux and am staying with Win 7 for the moment. I LOVE how I have my system organized with it. Looked at Linux docks and they do not have the functionality this has. I dread when I will have to leave it behind.

Thanks Jorge

Are you using the Windows 10 style UI elements (Preferences -> General -> More Options -> Use Windows 10 style...) ?

Also, did you change anything in your Performance settings (Preferences -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced) ?

No, I was using the regular type, I hadn't seen that option. But I just tried it and the same freeze happens with that.

Performance settings are the same as I always had them, didn't change them. I think they are the default settings. I find the performance of the docks wonderfully speedy and I don't care about memory usage i have lots.

I have more information.

With the tooltips enabled in Win 10 or default type, I looked to see if the problem occurred on each tab. On tabs containing shortcuts to apps there is no problem. The problems only occur on the tab that has links to folders I often use. and the freeze happens when I mouseover a shortcut for a folder containing a lot of stuff, like the music or photo folders that contain Gigs of data. On folder links that contain smaller amounts of data this doesn't happen. I supposed it is taking time to gather stats about the amount or sizes of stuff in the folder. If there is a lot of stuff, hence the delay. and it is only if I am using an effect on the mouseover. The animation effect gets interrupted mid movement and continues once the tooltip pops up.

This might just be a fact of life when using it with large folder links.
