I found an issue with having the Workshelf span multiple screens.

To recap, I have four equal sized screens arranged as:

23
14

The Workshelf is positioned at the bottom of screen #2. But I wanted to have more icons in the Quick Launch so I went into Workshelf->Shelf properties, position tab, and selected Extend shelf over all monitors when docked. The Workshelf obediently extended itself over screen 3 to give me a really long and cool Workshelf, but I noticed that screens 1 and 4 (my bottom screens) have a space for the Workshelf but there's no Workshelf in the space.

Also, I seem to be having a problem moving the Workshelf. Selecting a different screen causes it to stay on the original screen until I rearrange a tab and that causes it to move to the new screen. Accessing the properties causes the Workshelf to return to the old position until the tabs are rearranged again.

The good news is that temperatures in Boston will be in the 60s tomorrow so the weather module won't freeze up...

The Workshelf seems to have a problem being notified it needs to change screens. For a long time it wouldn't move even by changing tabs until suddenly it moved without warning.

There also seems to be an issue with notifying other apps to shrink a bit on the new screen. The Workshelf is now on screen 1 but the browser on screen 2 is still leaving space for the Workshelf and the editor on screen 1 is not. Minimizing and maximizing the screens doesn't fix it. The Workshelf isn't extended over multiple monitors.

Details, details...

How are you making it move to another screen? Preferences, context menu?

Step-by-step please, so I can try to reproduce the issue here. :D

o Bring up the Workshelf
o Go to Workshelf->Shelf properties
o Click on the Position tab
o Select a different screen with "Attach to the screen edge of which monitor"
o Click Apply
- Workshelf doesn't move. The dropdown box will return to displaying "Monitor 1"
o Click Ok
o Rearrange some Workshelf tabs. If lucky, the Workshelf will move to the new screen. Most of the time it won't.

The Workshelf won't drag so this is the way I do it. The "Prevent shelf from being moved by dragging with the mouse pointer" is unchecked, but I guess it has to be undocked to drag.

Holy Guacamole!!!!

How long has such a basic function been broken like that?

Fixed, thanks. As a work-around for now, use the the Shelf's main right click context menu -> Screen Positions -> Monitor

I guess not many people have four monitors like I do. I found a third video card so that I could add two more monitors, but I don't think Windows could handle it if I did. For that matter, I don't think *I* could handle it since the heat output of these puppies makes my cube over 80 degrees. I have to have a fan blowing on me all the time. Ahh, tropical breezes...

Lol. I get you. :)

I have three monitors, but the problem is that my stuff is already set up just the way I want it and therefore I don't usually change stuff around.

Something like this normally happens because of a change to code that was previously working fine. It's impossible to re-test ever possible permutation/combination of settings every time you make a small change to the code.

I don't know how the Workshelf determines monitor numbers but according to Windows, my monitors are set up as:

23
14

and the monitor configuration a la Workshelf is:

12
34

Not a big deal but I thought it worth mentioning.

I have to admit that Workshelf's method makes more sense. My configuration was based on cable length, when I got my monitors (I started with 2), and getting mixed up as to which cables went where (I have the New York City telephone system behind my monitors).

There you go. :) That's because WorkShelf deliberately sorts monitors in terms of their position in the 2D space, which makes total sense. Windows numbering is pretty much arbitrary.

Anyway, the number of the monitor is quite irrelevant. It's just a way to help us distinguish between monitors with the same brand name. :)

This could be similar to a problem I have always had. I run Extreme om my laptop which normally is on the desk connected to a second monitor which is placed higher, above my laptop monitor. I have the workshelf on the top edge of the second/upper monitor. If I disconnect and take it out into the world, using just the laptop screen alone, the shelf moves to the top of the laptop monitor. No problem.

When I get home and reconnect the second monitor, Extreme does not seem to detect the connection to the second monitor and move to the top of the second screen. I can only get to the shelf if I VERRRRYY Carefully inch my cursor between the two monitors. Sux. The quick workaround I have always used is to open a preferences dialog and simply click OK. A couple seconds later it remembers my usual setup and just moves the shelf up the the top of the other monitor again. It just needs a reminder it seems.

Now one thing I have not tried. I usually put the laptop on the desk, connect it to everything, including the monitor, then wake it up. It might be different if I wake it up first and THEN connect the monitor and see if Extreme detects it then. I have not tried that. I'll try when I get home.

EDIT - Nope, waking up machine an then plugging in second monitor makes no difference. Extreme still does not recognize that i have added the other monitor until I open a preference dialog and click OK.
