Hi folks,

just started using WinStep Xtreme yesterday and I'm very impressed. Still getting to grips with tweaking my settings and arranging icons (etc) and I've run into only one thing I feel like is 'missing', if only because I'm used to it.

I made great use of the 'pinned' documents list in the default W7 taskbar system, where it would allow you to pin a regularly accessed file to the icon of a program pinned to the task bar, making it quick and easy to access that file without having to go to its directory or into the program and look through recent files.

Is there a ways to do this in Xtreme, or something similar? I'm not a fan of a grouped Recent Documents folder that holds all recent files since I have to access so many each day. Is there a method to pin recent XLS files (for example) to my Excel icon on the task bar?

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated!

Jump lists are not directly accessible from the applications (icons) pinned on the Winstep taskbar in the way you are used to with applications pinned on the Windows taskbar.

I can however suggest the following two alternative ways to access jump lists:

Method 1: Use keyboard shortcuts
Pressing Win + Alt + number (1-9 on main keyboard) pops up the jump list associated with the application pinned to the Windows taskbar at the position indicted by the number (left most is 1). This still works if you use the Winstep taskbar.
For easy use you should then pin the applications on the Winstep taskbar in the same order as they are on your Windows taskbar.

Method 2: Use the Windows Start Menu
Drag applications to the top of the Windows Start Menu (pinned). Hoovering with your mouse over a pinned application in the Windows Start Menu will show the associated jump list.
To keep access to both the Windows Start and NextStart Menu you can:
1. Right click on the Start button (most left on the Winstep taskbar) and select Associate to Windows Start Menu. This now provides you access to the Windows Start Menu.
2. Right click on a dock and select subsequently: Insert New dock item, NextSTART Hotspot, 00 - Nextstart. This now gives you access to the NextStart Menu.

Hope one of these alternative methods suits you.
Of course, old habits die hard, so it may take some time to get used to.

Henk,

thanks for the suggestions - neither of those are ideal, obviously. It's the one big drawback for me, with the software. If anyone comes up with a way to do this or if it's added as a feature in the future then this would be the perfect customization option for me.

Meanwhile, I made a workaround with keyboard macros that means I can still use Winstep; a bit clunky but it works.

When Windows 7 came out I asked the forum about adding a 'recent documents' jumplist to running application buttons - nobody showed any interest at the time, so I dropped the idea.

You can blame them if you want.

I still remember more or less how it might work, so I'll add that feature eventually - just can't promise you when.

Understood and thanks. I like the app as-is - it would just be a great feature to have for many people (I believe), not just me.

I'm still using Winstep now, with my keyboard macro workaround to display the jumplist. I expect to buy it next week unless it suddenly explodes. :)

I always liked the idea too, and was a bit disappointed when nobody showed any interest. :)

Here's to Xtreme not going bang on you any time soon! :P

I recently install Nextstart and Workshelf and I am having the same problem. Using jumplists on office programs is the best and only way. I wish that this issue could be addressed. When I right click on a hotspot it should at least show the same things that windows did and then build and improve it. Other than this issue, I love the software and the ability to customize, but this issue is a deal breaker for me.

Is this something that will be addressed in the future?

Thanks

Best? I would qualify it as a 'good solution' by Microsoft. Only way? Not at all! You just got used to the jump list way of doing things. :)

And it has, quite a few times recently, in fact (although I think that discussion is buried in the Winstep Wish List thread).

You know, I do agree with you 100% on this.

Yes. Check this post HERE even though it does not talk directly about Jumplists.

Lately I've been adding a ton of missing key functionality, the problem is that all this takes time and I still haven't managed to grow eight arms  .

Jumplists are definitely on the to-do list, but Microsoft did not make it easier to manipulate them or I would have added them already a long time ago. Also, when I first started mentioning them, nobody seemed to care one way or another - only recently have some users started showing interest in their implementation.

Thanks for the reply Jorge. I agree about the "Best" statement and old habits die hard. I have been right clicking to everything for years, so its hard to retrain. I appreciate your efforts and look forward to new features in the future.

Thanks
