I know how to change a specific theme's single wallpaper - just RTFM. But, for the life of me I can't see how you choose a new image(S) from say, my hard drive. In other words, there seems to be no way to pick a jpg, gif whatever...

Read in an old thread here that to alter the original image, you need to rename the new file as 'wallpaper.bmp' .... I hope that by now this feature has been improved!

So, to clarify I'm asking if there is a way to select one or more files from my drive, therefore allowing simple customization and the ability to cycle through a series of pics.

Jorge can correct me if I'm wrong, but until the theming app is done, the only way to change the wallpaper is to put the wallpaper you want in the theme's folder and name it wallpaper.* (bmp, jpg, png, I'm not sure what all formats it supports). Because Jorge separated theming from setting up, theme settings (including wallpaper) are all going to be in the theming app, and he has removed them from the main settings dialog. If you want to have multiple wallpapers, you'll have to use Windows or some other wallpaper changer to do that. I don't believe Winstep will change wallpapers for you.

Wallpapers are a very important part of a theme: a bad wallpaper can break a great theme and vice-versa.

This said, Winstep applications are not intended as wallpaper managers, you can already do that pretty easily from Windows itself. It gives you the commodity of being able to select and use wallpapers from different themes but that is as far as it goes.

If you want to switch to a wallpaper in your hard drive completely unrelated to your existing Winstep themes, just use the Windows wallpaper dialog. If you want that wallpaper to be preserved when you switch between themes, you can enable the 'Lock Wallpaper' setting in the General tab of Preferences.

Otherwise, if you want a specific theme to use a wallpaper other than the one it came with, follow Vectornut's advice: select the theme in the Themes tab, click the Open Folder button and replace the theme's wallpaper.* file.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the two of you for the responses. Makes complete sense, and is exactly what I had been doing: using the Desktop's Personalization dialog peralter the wallpaper properties e.g. which ones and how many to loop.

Whilst I agree that the original background chosen by the artist fits well with the over all look-and-feel, there are a couple of reasons why a user may wish to go with another image:

1 - personal taste: chooses a pic or pics with a palette similar to the original
2 - as I use workshelf and winstart only (no modules or docks) I nueed only match colour schemes with the taskbar and tabs. For ex. I am currently running a some Hubble porn behind Darktech! :)

I agree. I've made a number of themes (mostly all ports from WindowBlinds or LiteStep or some such, with permission), and included wallpapers that went really well with the themes. The theme I'm using right now comes with a wallpaper that goes really well with it. But I am currently using Windows to change my wallpaper every half hour because I have a bunch of really cool wallpapers that I just like seeing. :-)
