Earlier today I attempted to update the paid v1041 to v1050. Avast Free stepped in to check the exe and said it was cracking and would inform me of the result. In the confusion I called up the website and installed the free version 1050 over the top of 1041. I now have two shortcuts on the W10 desktop, one Nexus and the other Nexus Ultimate. Selecting Nexus shortcut results in the docks appearing but not having any shortcuts links appearing when clicked. There are no shelf icons appearing either. I have temporarily disabled the Nexus icon in Automatic Organiser and restored Nexus Ultimate to an earlier backup. Will I have to totally uninstall Nexus Ultimate and reinstall again? The lic key has no effect on the free Nexus 1050 update.
Thanks.

That's what happens when we panic: we stop thinking straight. :)

Just delete the nexus.exe executable in

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

and also its shortcut icon from the Desktop.

Now, care to explain what Avast is actually doing? It will inform you later of...? What?!

Hello Jorge, Avast checks new exe files and displays a message saying it will take about 15 seconds to do so and when it returns with the message all ok the install can continue. In the attempt to update Nexus Ultimate, as the update panel popped up, Avast displayed a message I have not seen before in which it said that the Nexus file was cracking and they would respond with an answer. Before the answer came I was taken automatically to your website and I thought I would have to download and install the latest Nexus Free version. I downloaded it and then installed it manually. Avast then came back with the message the exe file was ok and thanked me for sending the file to their Avast Lab. I have never had this message before and have not had to wait so long for a response. Loading the Nexus free shortcut displayed it as v1050 with no display at bottom of preference page saying it was paid for and although no shelves were displayed all the dock icons were but with no attached links. I exited Nexus and loaded the paid for one which displayed v1041. All shelves and docks appeared but the docks appeared to be superimposed over the Nexus free ones. I deleted the Nexus free exe, rebooted but the display was the same. I then restored the Nexus free exe and disabled it in Autorun Organiser and restored to a Nexus backup made a few days ago which resulted in Nexus working ok. Although the version states 16.09.1041 I cannot attempt a second update as the update panel tells me I have the latest version installed. Seeing your response this morning I deleted the Nexus Free exe and shortcut, rebooted and Nexus Ultimate runs ok but still with the inability to update. I have two more computers in the house and and wondering whether to update them.

You're already running the latest version then, which is v16.9. The remaining digits are called the 'build number' and can normally be safely ignored - they're just the number of times an application has been compiled and will therefore be different from application to application.

Hello Jorge, I have just realised that the other two computers as yet not updated are v16.09.1040, the update for each is v1041. The desktop I updated yesterday must have been also v1040 as it now reads v1041. I really thought the update panel said 1050. Installing the Nexus FREE v1050 must have caused the problems I described originally. At the age of nearly 81 that must be the worst senior moment so far experienced. It puts my previous worst senior moment of putting a bottle of milk in the dishwasher in the shade.... Thanks once again.

Ahahaha! :)

Still, ignore those 1040, 1041 and 1050 numbers. They are meaningless when comparing the version number of different applications because they are *Build* numbers specific for that application. What matters are the numbers in bold below (listing the version numbers for the current releases):

Nexus free: 16.09.1050
Nexus Ultimate: 16.09.1041
WorkShelf: 16.09.1162
NextSTART: 16.09.805

The first two numbers are what really matters. As long as they start with 16.09 (or 16.9), you're good.
