This time, there are no themes listed in the themes tab.

1. Why? What did you change/do in the mean time?

2. Look under

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

do you see a Themes folder there?

3. What about

C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\local\Virtual Store\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

Does that folder exist? Does it have a Themes folder inside?

The only thing that I did differently was when I uninstalled Winstep I included deleting these items which you suggested:

C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\local\Virtual Store\Program Files\Winstep\
C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\local\Virtual Store\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

Other than that, I haven't done anything different. An odd thing, the past few times, Icon Packager icons were missing also, this time they are not missing and all are displaying correctly. That's new. Windowblinds can't find its files.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep has no themes folder.
C:\Users\<my user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\ does have a themes folder, but there is nothing inside it.

Exit Winstep Xtreme, delete

C:\Users\<my user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Winstep

and run Winstep Xtreme. Let me know if the themes became visible again.

Also, please post a screenshot with the contents of the

D:\Public Documents\Winstep

and

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

folders.

I would *really* like to know how that Languages folder got inside

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

Hmmmm....

Ok, two things:

1. Can you please check if the

C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\local\Virtual Store\Program Files (x86)\Winstep

folder spontaneously came back? If so, can you please also post a screenshot of the contents?

2. Can you see your themes inside

D:\Public Documents\Winstep\Themes\ ?

Ok, that's not right at all!

The fact that you see that inside the VirtualStore folder means that the Winstep application is trying to write to C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

Since it can't (Windows does not allow that since Vista), the folder gets 'virtualized' into the VirtualStore, so the application thinks it's writing under C:\Program Files (x86)\ when it really isn't.

The problem is that this should not happen at all. Winstep Xtreme will NOT try to write to C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\ at all unless it sees a Licenses and a Themes folder inside C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\ (in which case it will do it to preserve backwards compatibility with original installations going all the way back to XP).

Ok, lets try this again:

1. Exit Winstep Xtreme.
2. Delete the

C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\local\Virtual Store\Program Files (x86)\Winstep

folder again, but this time leave an Explorer window open inside

C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\local\Virtual Store\Program Files (x86)

to see when the virtual Winstep folder gets created again.

Now do NOT run Winstep Xtreme. Go to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

and launch workshelf.exe by double-clicking on it. Don't do anything with WorkShelf, just launch it. Watch what happens inside the VirtualStore folder and let me know your findings.

If the Winstep folder is not immediately created inside the VirtualStore folder at this point, then do whatever you've been doing with WorkShelf. Keep an eye on Winstep appearing in the VirtualStore folder again - let me know what happens.

Ok, very strange... anyway, got to go get some sleep now, sorry...

We'll go on tomorrow.

There is another possibility for this happening: WorkShelf being unable to get a folder from CSIDL_COMMON_DOCUMENTS - but this would probably indicate a problem with Windows itself.

No problem Jorge. Looks like it's almost 05:30 there. Go to sleep. I'll do this as long as you need to tomorrow.

I moved the documents folder back to its default location c:\users\public\documents.

When I booted back to my desktop, my theme was loaded correctly, but Workshelf showed no themes on the themes tab. The registry entries were pointing to the correct locations for the current theme.

I exited WS, deleted the Winstep directory from the virtual store and loaded WS.
The directory was NOT recreated in the virtual store and all my themes were back.
This is for the default public documents location, not D:\

Mind moving it back to D: to figure out what might be going on?

After moving to D: again, download THIS small test program I made, unzip into

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

and run TestPath.exe. Please post a screenshot of the results.

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but did you try uninstalling WS completely, then moving the folder location, then reinstalling WS?

Yes he did, that's not the problem.

I suspect the API calls to get the current location of the Public Documents folder fail if the user has moved it somewhere else. But I can only be sure after he runs that little test application and shares the results. :)
