That link is for Nexus Ultimate only, which is what he is using... and requires a previous v25.7 Nexus Ultimate full installation.

I should do a proper public beta for Nexus Ultimate and Winstep Xtreme in the next few days.

Of ccourse it is, silly bugger me! How the heck I forgot about that escapes me. :( Too immersed in the job I guess.

25.9 installed no problem

Multi-select works nicely. Ctrl click, shift click, click & drag. All good.

Personally, in Windows File Explorer I also use ctrl+shift click to select blocks of icons to add to my ctrl-clicked single icons. Multi-select does not currently allow that. But I don't use Shelves and most people probably don't ctrl+shift select, so maybe not worth implementing it - I'm just letting you know.

My system tray still just shows the blue dot and network icons I'm afraid. I tried rebooting but Nexus reverted to 25.8 for some reason - can I prevent that?

I assume you have the systray in Ultimate set to display all icons? That being so, are those the REAL system tray icons or the "clones" provided by Ultimate? To find out, right click on one of those visible icons. What kind of menu do you get? The Winstep skinned menu or a Windows menu?

I'm just as clueless as you? Did you click roll-back?

Try installing the beta again, then make sure the proper nexus-ultimate.exe version is inside C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

I think this is the case, the code was still forcing the blue arrow to appear regardless of your current "show all tray icons" setting (which could not even be changed because the setting would be disabled in Windows 11 22H2 + systems).

If you can confirm the tray icons that do appear indeed belong to Windows and are not the Winstep "clone" icons, we are (will be) good.

Thanks.

CTRL + SHIFT at the same time does not work, but I think functionally you can achieve pretty much the same thing, e.g.; you can press CTRL to select a couple of separate individual icons, then CTRL again to select the first icon of a sequence, then press SHIFT to select the last icon in that sequence.

This will result in your two individual icons plus the selected sequence of icons all being highlighted.

Interesting. In my Linux file manager, I can press <ctrl> to single select some files, and the change to pressing <shift> to select a block of files from the last selected onwards. Vice versa, I can use <shift> to select a block of files and then change to <ctrl> to add some individually selected files. All dead simple really. :D

Third time is the charm, hopefully.

Download the new v25.9 beta of Nexus Ultimate from HERE, exit all running Winstep applications, unzip and run setup.

I'm afraid not.

I feel bad for taking up your time with this. Is there anything I can do to help diagnose the issue?

Man! I'm running out of possible causes.

Simply by answering my questions in a timely manner lol? And, if you really want to go the extra mile and help me in return, also by giving some feedback on the "what's next after v25.7" thread like Techlobo has been doing... :D

If you had replied to my question about which context menu popped up before this beta (or showed me that last screenshot) I would have realized something else was off before releasing the beta...

If you check the "what's next after v25.7" thread you will realize I am working as fast as I can on many things at once which also need testing, and I can't wait multiple days for a reply to my questions.

I understand people are busy and this is just yet another application for them, but it ends up being frustrating for me too because I actually am trying to get the Winstep application to work properly with ExplorerPatcher, despite ExplorerPatcher being a 3rd party "hack" (and I really don't want to install it on my system or any of my VMs).

I missed this question somehow. Apologies. It is showing the Winstep skinned menu (screeshot attached).

You are quite right. That works. Nice.

Understood. I appreciate your efforts and realise it's frustrating with me not being as quick as I could in responding. Good luck with the next release.

I've got one more trick up my sleeve:

If the version of Windows is 22H2 or above, I'm counting the number of tray icons using the old method - if ExplorerPatcher is running this should result in a number other than 0.

If it is 0 I assume Explorer Patcher is not running and I tell the application to use the "cloned" icons instead.

This test is normally done once at startup. It CAN happen that when this test is done ExplorerPatcher has still not set its hooks into Explorer and therefore there are still no tray icons to retrieve.

It just occurred to me we can actually verify if this is the issue in the version you have (and hopefully you will read this and reply in a timely manner):

1. Make sure the systray is NOT being displayed in ANY dock, shelf, drawer or grid stack. Go through all of them, you MUST make sure it is not being displayed anywhere in the Winstep application.

2. Now once you're sure of this, re-enable the tray for one of the docks.

The reason this might work is because the Winstep application only uses resources when absolutely necessary. If no systray is being shown anywhere, the Winstep application shuts down everything related to it. So, if you close every instance and then enable it again, the tray initialization routine that is normally only ran at the very beginning is going to run again.

And, if I am right, this time it will detect icons in the Windows tray due to ExplorerPatcher already being in execution.

If it doesn't work, well, at least that is one more potential cause we can ignore.

I gave it a good go, but it didn't seem to work, unfortunately. Here's the breakdown ...

1. I'm on version 24H2
2. I checked all trays etc to make sure System Tray was off for all of them, even the deactivated ones. I deactivated everything except my main tray just to make sure. First screenshot shows system tray turned off for the only active tray.
3. Clicked Exit on Nexus
4. Restarted Nexus. Reactivated my empty dock with no system tray still. (second screenshot)
5. Clicked "Show system tray" and applied.
6. Same icons show up as before, i.e. with blue dot. (third screenshot)

As an aside, I also tried changing every setting in Explorer Patcher that looked like it might impact system tray icons and disabled/enable in Nexus each time. But no change.

I also tried using Windhawk and then StartAllBack instead, and tried each of the modules that impact system tray icons. Disabling/enabling system tray in Nexus each time. But no change.

Ok, thanks for the quick feedback and the screenshots.

Time to take out the big guns, I think I spotted another possible cause.

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!

You blooming legend. Nice one. Tracking down software issues without even being able to test it is no mean feat.

Thank you so much for giving this the time. The system tray is fundamental to the way I organise my desktop, so this would have left me stuck on the previous builds if you hadn't fixed it.

YAY! :D

Believe it or not, I am truly glad we managed to track down and fix this one. Thanks for the feedback. :D
