Should workshelf display version 2.5 or should it display Version 8.2 after you install the update.

I am very confused right now. Please set me stright! I am still learning workshelf. I prefer WS over nextstart!

I am also a registered owner of WinCustomerize too. I have stopped using WC and using Workshelf as I like it much better than WC!

Thanks for helping a rookie on WS !

Hi Gary!

Yes, I realize that having two different version numbers for the Winstep Xtreme suite and the applications themselves can be a bit confusing. Let's see:

The suite version number is based on the date of release, in the format Year.Month, e.g.; 'Winstep Xtreme 7.11' is a version released on November 2007, 'Winstep Xtreme 8.2' a version released on February 2008.

On the other hand, each application part of the Winstep Xtreme suite (NextSTART, WorkShelf and FontBrwoser) has it's own individual version number: NextSTART is currently at version 4.5, WorkShelf at version 2.5 and FontBrowser, being a bare bones font browsing utility, still at version 1.0.

This is a bit like the MS Office suite, where the whole suite is called 'Office 2007' but each application (Excel, Word, etc...) has its own individual version number.

Anyway, the simplest ways to tie the two different version schemes together is

1) Read the History-ns.txt and History-ws.txt files on your c:\Program Files\Winstep\ folder.

or

2) Go to the Winstep web site and read the small news pannel at the right - it displays the current Winstep Xtreme version and the versions of each of its components.

Also, when you mention 'Wincustomize', I think you actually mean Stardock's 'Object Desktop'. Wincustomize is the skinning site (which is also owned by Stardock).

You are right. I meant "stardock" but I am also a Member of wincustomize too! I just thought they were one of the same.

I have spent so much money on software I could build a house.

Thanks for setting me stright but don't be disappointed too much if I get confused Again!!

by the way: is WinXtreme and Stardock files compatable? can both Run at he same time?
Just thought that might be part of my problem in the other thread. I sure hate to uninstall stardock as I am on dialup connetion and it would take me a month or longer to download what I have now!!! I only wish I had found WinXtreme BEFORE Stardock! I would never have got Stardock.

Later

Ah-ah! Guess this is the answer to your other icon freezing problem. I bet you won't get the freeze if you're connected to the Internet when changing the icon. Well, at least now I know what needs to be fixed (you see, this would never happen to me because I am connected to the Internet 24/24 hours, which is probably why I couldn't reproduce your problem)! :D

I wish High Speed was available in my area. I am an old forgie and live in the boonedocks. It will be serveral years before I get High Speed if I live that long...

Not sure if I was on the net at the time I tried to change the Icon or not. But going to try that. I fear I will have to Re-Boot Again...

Thanks for the Reply

As soon as I read your reply to me in this section I loaded Workshelf. Drug the URL of this forum to the URL shelf. Worked great. I clicked on the "change Icon". It locked up.

the start menu still worked as well as Min the Firefox browser I am using. It would not let me move the "change Icon" window. it just beeped everytime I tried.

I didn't have to Re-Boot this time tho. I just Exited out of Workshelf and that worked. I lost my URL of course.

I was pulling 6% on my CPU? and it died down to 0 before I exited out of WS!

Sorry to be so much trouble. But right now I am lost as a Blind Old Bull !!

thanks
