Any Nvidia driver users ever have a problem with the nView Desktop
Manager and NextSTART?

When I installed a PNY Quadro NVS 280 PCI card in my machine
(a dock actually as I'm using a laptop) I went straight to the Omega
v169 drivers and all was good.
Recently when trying to troubleshoot some video playing issues
I decided to see if there were any recent Quadro-specific driver
offerings out there.
From PNY I downloaded all of them (from v84 to 169) for future
use/testing but installed 176.15 (for Quadro NVS) from Nvidia's site.

Anyhind, now when I use nView at startup the NS systray is always
blank. Only way to get the icons to appear is to bring up NS's prefs and
click Apply.
Neither Refresh Systray nor Hide/Show Taskbar works.
When I show the Windows Taskbar the icons are okay but when going
back to NS they're gone again.

I have a dual monitor setup and found that window placement just
doesn't work well without something like nView. For instance I always
have my browser open in the same position on the 2nd monitor
but without a desktop manager sometimes it'll open there sometimes
it won't (or it will but in a different position causing me to drag it to the
middle of the screen).

Just wondering if there are any settings or tweaks to nView that'll
make it stop messing with the NS systray.
Given that my video playing problems seem to be codec related
and not video driver I guess I can always downgrade to other nvidia
drivers if need be.

By the by, I did a search for free alternate managers out there and
there really doesn't seem to be any.
UltraMon is terribly expensive given the fact that I wouldn't use
half of its features. Just need a simple but good window management
utility.

Wish List time: Add multi monitor window management to NS Task Management. :)

Which reminds me, when I first used to start nView it would tell me
that a desktop (or display) manager was already in use.
Was it referring to Windows itself, NS/WS, or something else?

Marc

have a look at www.Actualtools.com for a alternative to Ultramon.
I use their 'actual windows manager' software and find it excellent.

Thanks for the pointer. I had never heard of Actual Tools 'til now.

I decided to test Actual Window Menu, Actual Window Guard, and
Ultramon. None cause problems for the NS systray so that's good.

I found that Ultramon (v3beta) seems to have no settings for individual
window management that I can see.

Actual Window Menu isn't bad and the menu options and hotkeys are
pretty cool. However, it doesn't provide for window placement when
a program starts.

But the Guard program seems to fit the bill. Now my test apps open
and move to the position I specify.
With nView clicking the min/max button maximized to the monitor in
use but with Ultramon & AWM a program would maximize across
both monitors (the desktop). Right-clicking the titlebar would work
correctly though. With Guard I was able to make sure a program
maximized to just the monitor, regardless of where I clicked.

I'll play with it some more but it looks good.
Thanks again,
Marc

marcdw,

You really should try Actual Windows Manager, I'm sure you will find it does everything you require, including sizing and placement of windows on startup etc. It combines the functions of all the individual programs into one. I bought a licence for this program and think its excellent, there is a new 5.3 version due out any moment now. Like winstep extreme it is under contant development and they are open to suggestions offer superb support (also like Winstep) and quick to correct any bugs reported

If you go to http://www.downloadpipe.com/purchase/Ac ... 52834.html you get a 20% discount.

Regards

Forgot to mention Winstep Extreme and Actual Windows Manager coexist together fine. No conflicts at all with each other.

After thinking and re-thinking I just couldn't part with the near $50
the total package costs.
I re-thought about it when I noticed the total cost of Actual Windows
Guard and Actual Windows Menu equaled the full package.

Using dual monitors I haven't had much need/want for a virtual desktop
anymore.
The only WindowBlinds skin I use (at least on this old machine) is
JTFolden's OPENSTEP-EUI(*) which has builtin features such as window
rollup/rolldown, stay-on-top, and move to bottom (the latter two I
forgot about until I reread the README file).
So that's several things I don't really need that are provided in
Actual Windows Manager.

However, your link helped me out as there was also a 20% discount
for Actual Windows Guard so I went for that.
I may consider the full package later once I dust off my much more
capable desktop.

(*) Man, that skin is ten years old now. I've updated and modified it
since 2005 to keep up with WB 5 and 6 but I can't seem to get away
from it. :)
