11.2 allows you to specify which file types display a thumbnail. Perhaps you changed it by accident? The information is shared between WorkShelf and NextSTART.

Open WorkShelf Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Advanced button -> Thumbnail File Types button.

thanx for quick reply.
yeah, didn´t see that point.
but jpg etc is selected!
but i just see the standard-pic as preview for all images.
for movies there´s a preview-image but not a preview-movie, like it should.

Excuse me? Why "should" it show preview movies? You mean, if I preview a directory full of movies, I "should" get a shitload of icons, all showing small videoclips?!!!
Umm... try, no...

Sorry? What exactly do you mean? Preview images are static.

Do you see those JPGs as thumbnails in Explorer when you chose 'Large icons' or as simple icons?

I ask this because Winstep doesn't do the actual rendering of thumbnails, it re-lies on Windows to give it the thumbnail. If it doesn't show a thumbnail in Explorer, it won't show a thumbnail in Winstep.

Also, are you sure .JPG is in the list instead of just .JPEG?

for the icons of elements in docks or in the shelf it´s the same.
if i choose a jpg-image as icon, it can´t be displayed.

Well, I don't know. Works here and nobody else is complaining.

What do you have associated to JPG files in your system (i.e.; what program do they open in if you double click a JPG file)?

Also, what is your Windows version? 32 or 64 bit?

And finally, have you tried already clicking the 'Default' button in WorkShelf Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Advanced button -> Thumbnail File Types ?

yes it´s really a miracle.
i already pressed the "standard"-button in filetypes.
and i tried to associate jpg with different programs in windows. acdsee, google-picasa, windows standard viewer)
i also tried to completely remove an reinstall winstep extreme and searched the whole registry for entries...
my system is windows 7 32bit.
so, i think i gotta give it up.

Err, this might be stating the obvious, but since I forgot to ask in the first place: are you sure the 'Show document, image and video files as thumbnails' setting is enabled in WorkShelf Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Advanced button?

If it's not that, something else for you to try, although you would get no thumbnails in Explorer either if this wasn't set properly:

Go to Control Panel and then open Folder Options. In there you should go to the View and under Files and Folders you'll see "Always show icons, never thumbnails". Remove the check mark in that box and then click on Apply at the bottom right. You might also want to make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to "Display file icon on thumbnails".

according to what you said gorge as long as i can see the thumbnails in windows explorer i should see them in workshelf. i just checked my movies folder for mkv videos again and i do get the thumbnails in explorer. i copied a mkv to the desktop and then clicked the desktop tab and still it is just the default icon. i even went in and unchecked the show option in advanced options, applied, then went in and rechecked and applied and still no mkv thumbnail.

EDIT:

i also rechecked that mkv is in the right hand column for file types to generate thumbnails for.

if it helps:
win 7 pro x64
both the 32 and 64bit klite codec pack
divx codec pack

Some Codec paks will display thumbnails for 64 bit applications but not for 32 bit applications - and vice-versa.

This should be unrelated to this discussion because the rendering of JPG thumbnails is built-in into the system.

ok can you move my previous post, your post and this one to a new thread the?

as for the codec packs generating thumbnails i know from experience both the 32 bit and 64 bit packs do for klite as well as the divx codec pack do generate thumbnails. i installed each pack independent of each other after clean installs of windows and had my mkv thumbnails each time, so it is not a matter of if the codec packs do or don't, because each of them does show mkv thumbnails in explorer.
