If I add a program to an empty slot in Quick Launch, it copies the program instead of just adding the shortcut. I think a shortcut should be created instead.

And it's supposed to do just that (add a shortcut, not copy the file).

Where did you drag the program FROM? Explorer? Another tab in the Shelf?

Nevermind... you dragged it from an Explorer window... fixed, thanks. :D

Actually... might not be solved yet because I tried drag & dropping notepad.exe into the Quick Launch tab in the Shelf in the previous version of the application (i.e.; before the fix I just did) and, even though it showed me a visual indicator that the file would be moved (which doesn't happen anymore, now it shows the correct LINK visual cue) it STILL created a shortcut (as it should) instead of moving or copying the file.

So, again, where did you copy that program FROM?

o Right click on an empty spot in Quick Launch
o Select "New Program"
o Workshelf Browser pops up
o Select a program (the .exe file)
o Click OK
o Right click on new program in Quick Launch
o Rename it, making sure to eliminate the .exe at the end
o Icon changes to page icon showing that it's not a shortcut
-----
The following sometimes happens if the taskbar is viewed while the Workshelf Browser window is displayed, and sometimes happens when OK is pressed in the Workshelf Browser window after selecting a program, and after renaming a shortcut in the Quick Launch bar:
o Notice that the vertical taskbar has shrunk to half its width and the weather module has disappeared
o Resize taskbar
o Close and reopen the Weather module to get it to the desktop
o Go to the taskbar to get it to show and get the weather module onto the taskbar

Oh! See how *every* little detail matters when reporting a bug?

Because the most common method to add items to the Shelf and docks is via drag & drop, it did not even cross my mind you were using the context's menu 'New Program' method to do it instead!

Ok, I fixed it.

When you right click on a Shelf tab that should only accept shortcuts (such as the Quick Launch tab) the right click context menu now displays 'New Shortcut' and 'New Folder Shortcut' instead of 'New Program' and 'New Folder'.

Selecting 'New Shortcut' allows you to select a file via the Browser dialog, and *shortcut* to that file is created instead of the file being copied.

Likewise, selecting 'New Folder Shortcut' allows you to select an existing folder via the Browser dialog, and a shortcut to that folder is created in the target folder.

The *crucial* detail you provided in your message above about using the right click menu instead of drag & drop (as I assumed) came in the nick of time, by the way: I'm about to release v16.3 as a maintenance update - probably later today.

Regarding this other issue you are reporting, now that you know how every little detail matters (because I am not there over your shoulder looking at what you are doing):

Can you please provide screenshots showing this problem? E.g.; normal taskbar on your screen, and how it gets after shrinking to half width.

Also, I take it you have the WorkShelf Weather module captured into the NextSTART taskbar, right?

Is there a sequence of actions that would enable me to reproduce this issue here 100% of the time?

I need a quick reply to this one give the impending release of v16.3, sorry.

I uploaded three images. The first one shows my normal taskbar. The second shows it just after a Quick Launch rename. The third one shows it after the taskbar was allowed to autohide once after the second image.

Part of the workshelf can be seen at the bottom of the top screen. The Nexus is in the upper right corner of the top screen but not visible because of the cropping.

The taskbar spans two screens on the left side of a four-screen configuration. So you'll see the first screen in the upper half and the second screen in the lower half. There are two more screens to the right of the ones shown for a total of four screens. The screen configurations are:

23
14

Screens 1 and 2 are on the motherboard, and screens 3 and 4 are on a plug-in video card.

I wasn't able to show much of the screens because of the 256 KB upload limit.

Warning: The screenshots were posted in reverse order by the board. Winstep1a is the first image referred to.

So after renaming a Quick Launch item the taskbar loses the Weather module + system tray, and the tasklist extends horizontally beyond the taskbar? Wow.

I think 'losing' the weather module is what is causing all the weirdness.

How are you renaming a Quick Launch item? Step-by-step, please.

o Click on the Quick Launch "tab" on the Workshelf
o Right click on the Quick Launch item to be renamed
o Select Rename
o Type the new name and click OK
o Immediately go to the taskbar to see the corruption
o Autohide the taskbar then show it to see it has somewhat fixed itself, but missing the weather module

I just noticed there's a very narrow window of time where the taskbar appears corrupted. Apparently the taskbar is undergoing some sort of refresh when the rename occurs. Maybe because the Quick Launch appears in the taskbar as well? I should probably remove that since the Workshelf supplies all my Quick Launch needs.

I removed Quick Launch icons and now the taskbar quickly displays corrupted (image 2) and autohides on its own. Same result at the end (image 3).

The Quick Launch section in the NextSTART taskbar is a mix of Windows Quick Launch icons and NextSTART hotspots.

Because of this, the Quick Launch folder has a 'watchdog' placed on it which automatically notifies NextSTART when the contents of the Quick Launch folder have been changed. This usually means a Quick Launch shortcut has either been added or removed, and thus NextSTART needs to refresh its Quick Launch section to reflect the changes.

Anyway, I think I now have enough info to try to reproduce the problem here.

Need you to do something for me, please:

Open NextSTART Preferences, and, in the About tab, click the version number at the top right. What is the *complete* version number for NextSTART.exe in the dialog that pops up?
